Fr. Nathan Cromly's Mom's Message
Garces Memorial was blessed to have Fr. Nathan Cromly on our campus Wednesday and Thursday. On Wednesday he celebrated Mass with the students, heard confessions, and met with Theology classes for group discussions about the Catholic faith, character, integrity, compassion, and God's love for them. Thursday morning he held a small prayer service followed by a group discussion with some of our Garces moms. He discussed the importance of a mother's role in the life of their child. The one thing a mother can pass onto their child is "heart" and that a mother is the guardian of their child's joy. A mother's role is to teach a child how to live from the inside, from their spirit. Fr. Nathan said, "as a mom, you always have the key to their heart and when they try to pull away from you as a teenager, do not let go of that key. That key opens a special door into their heart which you alone possess. It is a mother's job to teach them who they are. A mother's heart is the guardian of God's love for them." After the meeting with the mom's, Father Nathan held confession and met with students from various classes throughout the day, inspiring them to be all that God wants them to be.
Fr. Nathan's Challenge to the Students
During his talks with the students in the chapel - he issued a challenge to them. He asked to come into the chapel once a day and to do the following
: genuflect in front of the alter and say a short prayer - "I love you Jesus. Help me to love others the way you do." He promised them that if they can do that once a day until Christmas break, they will change their relationship with God. To help facilitate those students who want to grow in their relationship with the LORD, Garces will have
the chapel open all day. Students will be able to drop in before school, at break, during lunch, and after school.
When you have a moment, ask your child if he, or she,
had an opportunity to go to the chapel and hear from Fr. Nathan outside of Mass. Also, ask them about Mass with Fr. Nathan as he explained all the steps of the Mass and told them if they ever get lost during Mass, to remember to "follow the bread". It may give you an opportunity to discuss the importance of faith and God's love for them. Fr. Nathan's specialty is working with 18-35 year-olds on deepening their relationship with God through his Eagle Eye Ministries.

Freshmen Retreat - Unity
The freshmen retreat was all about UNITY. The freshmen began the day with a talk from Mr. Cobb about how Garces began the service hour program and the importance of giving back. The students received special letters from their parents and, in turn, wrote thank you letters to their parents. They heard from Mr. Cobb about the importance of keeping one's faith and having forgiveness in one's heart, even in the absolute worst of times. He challenged the students to stand in their faith during their four years at Garces and to grow in their love for God and for each other. The students also wrote letters to
their "senior selves" that they will receive at Senior Sunset. One of the favorite activities is when every freshmen puts on their retreat t-shirt and then write on each other's shirts. What is special about the activity is that they write what they "hope" for each other - courage, happiness, a great four years at Garces, love, strength, etc. By the end of the retreat, the students became more than the Class of 2021, they became family.

Garces Rams vs. BHS Drillers
Tonight at Sam Tobias Field
JV at 5:00 PM/Varsity at 7:30 PM
Tonight the Garces Rams have their league opener against the BHS Drillers on Sam Tobias Field. The Rams come into the game with a deceiving 0-5 record and we expect a great battle tonight between the Rams and the Drillers. Garces and BHS have been long-time rivals and while we are a young team, we are ready.
Before the game, we will honor one of our very special teachers, Mr. Steve Garcia, with the "Teacher of the Game" award. The entire student body voted and they selected Mr. Garcia to be honored tonight for all he does for his students and for Garces. In honor of our 70th anniversary, tonight we will have two special alumni team captains - Mr. Gary Ogilvie '55 and Mr.
Mike Ariey '82. At halftime of the game, we will honor two very special men with the Bob Carroll Service Award - Mr. John Pavletich and Mr. Jim McMurtrey. There is a student tailgate before the game, the Parent Club is supplying thunder sticks, and the students have called for a
PINK-OUT. It is going to be a great night on our campus - please come out and join us and root on our Rams to victory!
If you are unable to make the game, you can listen to it live on the GARCES RADIO NETWORK - 98.1 FM or 1230 AM. The game is the BVarsity Game of the Week and can be watched live on bakersfield.com as well.
Check out Coach Gass' interview on BVarsity about tonight's game:

Thank You Garces Paint Dads!
Garces Memorial is fortunate to have a dedicated group of "Garces Dads" who spend countless hours making sure our playing field looks the BEST in our community. They spend hours cutting out the stencils, designing the layout, measuring to get everything just right, cleaning the paint sprayers, mixing the paint, and paining the field. Tonight it is going to be awesome! Look for GARCES in each end zone. the Block G with RAMS on the 50 yard line, and a special touch of pink ribbons on the field as a tribute to those affected by breast cancer - survivors, fighters, and those we have lost to this horrible disease. Much Ram love to our "Paint Dads" - Jon Barnes, Jeremy Tobias, Justin Tobias, Bryan Briscoe, Robert Roberson, Eric Sill, Jon LaFever, Brad Giggy, John Hedden, and Floyd Reading.

Congratulations Mr. Nathan Holmes
Garces Memorial is honoring a teacher at every home football game this year. If the students are the heart of Garces, then our teachers are the soul of Garces. They work long hours, come in early, stay late, and show up at many of the students' events to lend their support. This year, we are asking the students to vote for the teacher they want to honor at each of our home football games. The students are asked to vote for the teacher who exhibits
excellence in the classroom along with involvement with the school.
The first teacher honored with the title of "Teacher of the Game" was Mr. Nathan Holmes. Mr. Holmes was honored before the start of the Edison game.
Mr. Holmes began teaching at Garces in 2006. He teaches history and coaches girls tennis. He is beloved by the Garces student body and often when he walks across campus you will hear "Holmes!" Not only is he well-liked, he is well respected.
Some of the quotes by the students who voted him in:
Mr. Holmes respects everyone's opinion in class and it is really helpful to our classroom discussion.
Mr. Holmes is the man, the myth, the legend!
He will come early to help us out - one time he came in at 7 AM for our entire AP class and he brought us donuts.
He is a good person and is super fair.
Mr. Holmes has a great attitude, drives a cool car, and he's tall.
Thank you Mr. Holmes for all you do for Garces. We hope you enjoy your "Teacher of the Game" t-shirt and wear it with pride.

Compassion in Action
On Wednesday, Garces Rams from three classes (Mr. Kekipi, Mr. Bedoy, and Mr. Cobb) came into MLH and created an assembly line to make over 250 sack lunches for St. Vincent de Paul. Normally we make 125 sack lunches once a month, but because of the St. Vincent de Paul BBQ, they were in dire need of lunches for two days - so we gladly added another sack lunch day to the schedule and did double duty. The students were awesome and knocked it out in less than 30 minutes. Thank you to the mom's from the Garces Parent Club who donated all the items needed to make the sack lunches along with delivering the "blessing bags" to St. Vincent's.
"What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." - James 2:14-17
