Arousal and Behavioral Regulation in Children with Autism
[Source: Your Therapy Source]

Problematic emotional behavior as expressed in tantrums, irritability, aggression, self-injury, anxiety, and impulsivity is often seen in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).  The Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders published research comparing the physiological arousal and behavioral regulation of emotion in the context of frustration in 29 children with ASD and 45 typically developing children (41-81 months).  The researchers monitored each participants heart rate continuously and emotion strategies were coded, during a locked-box task.

[ Source:  Medical X-Press]

A stepped care model of treatment for youth with anxiety can be effectively delivered using at least 14% less therapist time than traditional treatment service, reports a study published in the October 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP).

In today's stretched economy, finding cheaper and more efficient ways to spend our public health dollars is critical. Mental health professionals can now treat young people with

How 'Nature and Nurture' Maybe Influencing Eating Behavior in Young Kids
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

For most preschool-age children, picky eating is just a normal part of growing up. But for others, behaviors such as insisting on only eating their favorite food item-think chicken nuggets at every meal-or refusing to try something new might lead to the risk of being  over- or underweight, gastrointestinal distress, or other eating disorders later in childhood.

Parents and other caregivers often deem children as being "picky eaters" for a variety of reasons, but there is not a hard-fast definition in place for research. Nutrition and family

Japanese researchers have confirmed the second case known to science of a chimpanzee born with trisomy 22, a chromosomal defect similar to that of Down syndrome (or trisomy 21) in humans. The report on Kanako, a 24-year-old female chimp born into captivity, was led by Satoshi Hirata of Kyoto University in Japan, and appears in the journal Primates, published by Springer. Farm Eases Haircut Anxiety For Kids On The Spectrum
[Source: The Fresno Bee via Disability Scoop]

Five-year-old Saya Luna-Triplett used to be terrified to get her hair cut. The drone of voices, buzz of clippers and shearing of scissors in the confined space of a beauty salon were overwhelming and frightening to the girl with autism.

Hairdresser Kelly Muzio had a solution: Make a barber's chair out of a saddle on a bale of hay, and put it outside on her farm west of Fresno overlooking a pen filled with goats, chickens, ostriches and sheep.

Halloween Bat Dice Drawing
[Source:  Your Therapy Source]

Here is a simple game that requires paper, pencil and one die.  Player one rolls a die. To start your drawing you must roll a #1. When you roll the #1, you can draw the first item. Next player rolls and again must roll a #1 to start. If you do not roll a #1 your turn is over. Continue taking turns but now each time you roll you can draw the corresponding picture with the number. Once you roll the numbers 2-6 your drawing will be complete. The first player to complete the drawing is the winner!  For this dice drawing game, the children can practice drawing a Halloween bat.

A Jar Full of Feelings: Sensory Regulation Activity
[Source:  Mosswood Connections]

Explaining feelings and emotions to young children can be complicated; especially so for children on the Autism Spectrum. I had been making progress with one of my young students by drawing comic strips and meters but one day he told me, "This is not working. I have too many feelings!" The next level after recognizing and regulating one's emotions is to realize that there are many times that we have mixed emotions and we have choices about how we respond to those emotions.

31 Days of Pumpkin Activities on Instagram
[Source:  I Can Teach My Child]

Lately it seems like the only time I blog is when I am in a 31 Day Series.  We have done  31 Days of Indoor Activities for Toddlers31 Days of Outdoor Activities for Toddlers and now 31 Days of Pumpkin Activities.  Since my daughter started preschool this year, I am resigning myself to the fact that I have no more toddlers in my house :(.  So this series is just a generic "all ages" series with anything that involves pumpkins!

PT Corner: Wheelbarrow Walking
[Source:  Starfish Therapies]

Do any of you remember doing wheelbarrow races as a child? I do! I remember thinking it was hysterical that someone was holding my feet and I was racing someone else on my hands. Well, as much fun as that was, wheelbarrow walking is actually a great tool to incorporate with kids to help them get and stay strong.

OT Corner:  The Heavy Backpack Debate - Another Opinion
Editor's Note:  I found this article very interesting and contrary to AOTA's official position, please note however, PediaStaff does not endorse or refute this opinion.  We present it for it's general interest.

[Source:  ABC Therapeutics]

According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, heavy backpacks can cause serious injury to children.  The AOTA claims that heavy loads carried by 79 million students across the United States "can cause low back pain that often lasts through adulthood."  The AOTA also claims that according to 2013 statistics from the US

Sensory Corner:   How to Choose Halloween Costume for a Child w/SPD
[Source:  North Shore Pediatric Therapy]

Halloween is a time for kids to dress up in fun costumes, however, this may be very uncomfortable for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). Kids with SPD may find certain clothing uncomfortable due to tactile sensitivities. This may range from kid-to-kid; some kids may prefer to wear loose fitted clothing, some may prefer to wear clothes that are tight, and some kids may prefer to wear soft clothing. It is best to explore which type of clothing your child prefers prior to picking out a Halloween costume.
