COWBOYS OF THE STOCKYARDS
The Stockyards has seen its share of cowboys and cowgirls in its 150-year history. They've faced grit and grind of the cattle industry, felt the hardness of horns and dirt in the arena. They've made cattle trades, built buildings that stand the test of time and even survived a few brawls in the process. The spirit of the Cowboy continues in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. And with that we bring you one of today's Cowboys of the Stockyards.

JAY HESTER

Jay, in one word, what kind of cowboy are you?
Entrepreneurial

How are you connected to the Stockyards?
I'm the oldest continuous saloon keeper in the Stockyards. Starting with the Fort Worth City Limits in 1980 which later became the Stockyards Saloon. I currently operate the Cadillac Cantina and have since 1984. I'm a partner in Rodeo Exchange and own additional property in the area, one of which some may remember - the old hay lot here in the stockyards.

What is your favorite thing about the Stockyards?
The authenticity. This IS the way the west really was! I hope to see us keep it that way as much as possible. We have so much history to protect.

Tell us a great Exchange Avenue memory you have.
As a saloon owner the question is WHICH memory to share? I'll share a couple of the colorful but clean ones.

Jim Shoulders is considered by many to be the best rodeo cowboy ever. Well, back in the 70's & 80's Jim promoted Miller Lite with his trained bull Buford T. Lite. One night, Jim walked Buford right into the Cadillac Cantina. Folks in the bar got so excited they all spent the night hanging out with Jim and Buford and taking pictures.

Another time in the 90's, one of the rodeo contestants from the Cowtown Rodeo, rode his horse into the bar and right onto the dance floor. People started climbing up on top of the bar and jumping on the horse's back. Those crazy folks were taking pictures and dancing. Next thing I know there was a girl sitting on the horse with more than just her hat off...

...for more colorful stories visit Jay at the Cadillac Cantina next time you are in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The Military Museum of Fort Worth has been in operation for 8 years, but is a recent addition to the attractions of the Fort Worth Stockyards. We are a non-profit museum with an all-volunteer staff that is dedicated to sharing the stories and sacrifices of men, women and units from the 20th Century with a Texas connection.

To accomplish our mission of preserving this history we depend on a small admission fee, or donations, to stay in operation and keep these stories alive. Veterans and active duty soldiers, and kids 12 and under are always FREE.
We are honored our Documentary, narrated by Red Steagall, has been nominated by the Lone Star Film Festival this year.  It will be showing November 11, 2017 at 2:30 pm at Four Day Weekend Theater in Sundance Square.  Please join us for this showing.  Admittance only $10.00.

HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
Courtesy of the North Fort Worth Historical Society
After Armour and Swift opened their plants in 1903, the cattlemen of Texas began trusting the financial status of the Fort Worth Market. By 1904, Fort Worth was the nation's fifth largest livestock market. It was the largest market south of Kansas City and the largest in the entire Southwest during that half-century. The Fort Worth Stockyards went on to become the third largest Stockyards in the nation.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition  of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.

Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.

Sincerely,

Fort Worth Stockyards
National Historic District
