October is National Down Syndrome Acceptance Month

At the September 26th Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and the Hillsborough Township Committee declared October as National Down Syndrome Acceptance Month and asked all citizens to celebrate the abilities and accomplishments of those with Down Syndrome. Representatives from Gigi's Playhouse were recognized at the meeting for the work they do to support individuals with Down Syndrome and their families.
Approximately 1 in every 792 children are born with Down syndrome, representing an estimated 6,000 births per year in the United States. There are over 400,000 individuals living with Down Syndrome in the United States. People with Down Syndrome contribute to their families, their schools, their co-workers and society. They have hopes and dreams and make a difference in this world.
GiGi's Playhouse is a National Down Syndrome Achievement Center serving children and adults of all ages, providing educational and therapeutic programs at no charge in a format that individuals with Down Syndrome learn best, and their mission is to change the way the world sees Down Syndrome through national campaigns, educational programs, and by empowering individuals with Down Syndrome, their families and the community. GiGi's Playhouse in Hillsborough has successfully supported over 300 families in Central New Jersey since opening on January 2015. through community support have been able to educate others about Down Syndrome. GiGi's Playhouse's vision is to maximize self confidence and empower individuals to achieve their greatest potential. Their goal is to create a world where individuals with Down Syndrome are accepted and embraced in their families, schools and community.

At the September 26th Township Committee Meeting, the Shito Ryu Karate Do Genbu Kai New Jersey competition team was presented with a proclamation for their successful season.
The team consisting of Takeshi Mayer, Tres Marvin, Evan Meyer, Annalise Meyer, under the instruction of Sensei J Jeffrey Molesko and Sempai William Nehlsen, participated in in a total of 12 events at the 2017 AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) National Karate Tournament held in Raleigh, NC on June 28 through July 1, 2017.
Takeshi Mayer competed in six competitions and earned a Bronze medal in the heavyweight Sanbon Kumite division. Tres Marvin competed in two events in his first National competition. Evan Meyer competed in two events in his first Nationals and earned a Bronze medal in the heavyweight Green Belt Sanbon Kumite division. Annalise Meyer participated in two events in her first Nationals and was able to win one round of Kata before being eliminated from the bracket.

7th Annual Cancer Call Out
The 7th Annual Nick Magos Cancer CallOut was held on Sunday, September 24th.
The Cancer CallOut raises money throughout the year with their main event being "The CALLOUT."
Each year, the event, n
amed after Nick Magos, one of the founders of the Somerset County SWAT Team who passed away from cancer, is run
by SWAT Team members and is designed to benefit families who are in need of assistance due to their battle with cancer and or other life threatening illnesses.

Asian Indian Heritage Association Holds Annual
Garba and Dandia Night
Mayor Carl Suraci, Deputy Mayor Gloria McCauley and Committeeman Doug Tomson attended Garba and Dandia Night, held at Hillsborough High School on Saturday, September 30th.
The festival,
hosted by the Asian Indian Heritage Association,
is held each year to celebrate Indian Heritage.

Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade and Costume Contest at the Dog Park October 28th
The third annual Howl-O-Ween at the Ann Van Middlesworth Park Dog Park will feature a dog parade and costume contest. Registration is free and begins at 8:30 am on October 28th. The parade will begin at 9:00 am at the pavilion. There will be vendors, prizes, and fun for all!

Special Event at the SCLSNJ Hillsborough Library Branch
Friends of the Hillsborough Library Annual Book Sale
The Friends of the Hillsborough Library will host their annual used book and media sale at the Hillsborough Municipal Building. The huge selection includes recent used books for adults, children, and teens, as well as electronic media. Some of the categories of books for sale include: current fiction, sci-fi, romance, history, biography, sports, science, business, cooking, crafts, gardening, textbooks, reference, holiday, literature, self-help, and much more. There will be DVDs of movies and TV series for adults and children, as well as many music CDs, books on CD, and games. All proceeds of the sale support SCLSNJ's Hillsborough Library branch.

The Hillsborough Township Police Department is again participating in "Operation Take Back", a program from the Drug Enforcement Administration, for residents to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired household medicine. If you have household medicine that you wish to dispose of, please come to the Municipal Complex between the listed hours.

Hillsborough Township Police Department Reaches Out to the Community for Assistance with Domestic Violence
Hillsborough, NJ -October 4, 2017 -The Hillsborough Township Police Department seeks volunteers to join their Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) through its partnership with Safe+Sound Somerset, a private non-profit organization in Somerset County that provides support and advocacy to victims of domestic violence.
DVRT volunteers are specially trained members of the community who assist victims of domestic violence at local police stations. They work collaboratively with law enforcement to supply information and resources to victims in the aftermath of very stressful and traumatic events. They help victims with safety planning and navigating the Temporary Restraining Order process. By providing empathy and information, volunteers help to empower victims to make informed decisions for themselves and their families.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license as well as access to reliable transportation. In addition, volunteers must participate in an interview process, submit to background checks and successfully complete Safe+Sound Somerset's mandatory 40 hour training. Prior knowledge of domestic violence is not required.

JCP&L Fall Routine & UV/IR Patrols Pre-Flight Notice

(weather permitting), Chesapeake Bay Helicopters will be performing UV/IR patrols on the 500kV and 230kV and will also be performing Routine Patrols/Inspections on the 115kV lines in JCP&L. Chesapeake Bay Helicopters will be patrolling JCP&L territory full time until the inspections are complete. The patrols are estimated to take 7-10 days to complete and will be carried out by the following helicopters - please see the attached photos and following information:

A routine patrol/inspection is a general, overall look at the transmission line and associated hardware. The helicopter will be traveling at speeds of 25-30mph and may at times hover over top of structures and/or spans of conductor to get a better look at any problems/issues found during patrols.
An infrared (UV/IR) patrol is similar to a routine patrol in terms of speed (20-30mph) but special equipment mounted on the bottom of the aircraft is used to get a detailed look at the conductor, insulators, shield wire, and their associated hardware through the infrared and ultraviolet spectrum.
It should be noted that the contractor has been authorized to patrol the transmission circuits in their entirety (i.e. "breaker-to-breaker"), so patrols on certain lines may therefore extend into the neighboring regions. The flight crew provides information on their daily location to both Transmission Lines Maintenance and the FCC, and the pilot will be in communication with any local airports when in their airspace.

Local Couple Recycles Metal for Charity
A local Belle Mead couple, Brenda Overcash and Tom West started a wire and metal recycling program seven years ago, with the proceeds being given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Brenda and Tom pick up donations at residences and sometimes commercial organizations. All metals-iron, steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, and aluminum-and objects with an electric cord, motors and cords all by themselves are accepted. Donations of all sizes have been collected, ranging from tools, nails, pots and pans to major appliances and grills. They have also recycled some unique items,such as 150+ lockers from the Hillsborough and Bridgewater YMCAs and a storage container that weighed nearly 10,000 pounds. One Hillsborough resident, Emily Benadon, has said "being able to get rid of fire pits, cooking pans, smart phone cords and metal shelves by giving them to a good cause instead of simply throwing them in the weekly garbage is one way to make a difference in our community. Since meeting Brenda and Tom when volunteering at a local road race event several years ago and hearing about how they recycle for Cystic Fibrosis, I have been donating metal and wire to their program and I tell my neighbors about it."
Last year, the work of this family and their friends, enabled them to donate $9,000 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. They look forward to continuing this program to increase the materials that are recycled in the community and support the work of the Foundation to find a cure for this fatal disease. Fall Leaf Cleanup Help Available
Do you know an elderly or disabled person who needs help getting his or her yard ready for the winter months?
The Somerset County Office of Volunteer Services will have volunteers available in November to rake leaves for elderly and disabled homeowners around the county who have no other means to do yard work.
If you need this service or know someone who does, contact the Office of Volunteer Services by Oct. 31 at (908) 541-5715.
Additional volunteers are still needed as well. The annual leaf clean-up project will take place Saturday, Nov. 18. However, anyone who would like to help but cannot make it that day is welcome to schedule an alternative date by calling the Office of Volunteer Services at (908) 541-5715.
