Children gain so much by being in a garden, whether it is as a volunteer, as an after school participant, or as part of a school garden program, they get hands-on experiences that will last them a life-time. This photo includes children at the GFP demonstration garden, Pineville Youth Center, Oberlin Elementary School, and Fairview Alpha Elementary School in Campti, LA. GFP partners with each of these youth garden sites.

Garden Tips:
Grub worms feed on the root systems of grasses and your vegetables. Birds or ducks feed on grubs and help control them, but aren't always good for the garden. You can order nematodes that will help control grub worms naturally. They can be ordered and will arrive on a sponge that is not visible with the naked eye. The sponge gets soaked in water that you place in a sprayer and spray over your soil. The nematodes eventually multiply and will control the grub worms over time; they are also good for keeping flea larvae under control.

Volunteers of the Month - Spirits Food and Friends Crew

Spirits: Food & Friends staff volunteering at GFP for Workday Wednesday

We, at the Good Food Project  of The Food Bank of Central Louisiana appreciate the support of local organizations and businesses that partner with our sustainable gardening program. Stand out volunteers this month were from one of those partners - Spirits: Food & Friends who would like to say: "At Spirits: Food & Friends, we see ourselves as part of a community--the Cenla community. It was true when our doors first opened in 1967, and we like to think that it rings even more true today! To that effect, we have launched the #SpiritsHomegrown campaign, which is our ongoing effort to be organized, generous, and diverse about the ways in which we give back to our community.

The Good Food Project was a perfect jumping-off point for our volunteer efforts. Any individual can volunteer to assist with the Good Food Project garden on Wednesdays, but you will catch the Spirits Homegrown crew there once per month, helping put a small dent in some larger projects that all further the mission of bringing more food and food awareness to Central Louisiana!"

We have enjoyed having them in the demonstration garden this month and look forward to strengthening the partnership.
