Looking Toward this Sunday October 8, 2017

Scripture: Psalm 19: 1-11, 14
Sermon: The Slow Club
Lib McGregor Simmons will preach at 8:30 and 9:45 in Lingle Chapel and 11 in the sanctuary.

In the midst of the heartbreak and tragedy which has marked the past few weeks, it can be difficult to maintain joy and hope.  And so we turn to Psalm 19 which portrays sunrise as a groom bounding down the aisle toward his bride with unrestrained happiness and the progression of the sun across the sky as a jubilant celestial runner headed toward sunset.  In the images of the Psalm, we are invited to slow down in order to stop, look, and listen for the ways that creation is re-presented with the dawning of each new day, so that we can join the ongoing work of the Creator, maintaining joy and never losing hope that one day justice and peace will reign on earth.

The Geneva Choir will sing Praise to God, Immortal Praise at the 8:30 service.
The Chancel choir will sing Sing Joyfully at the 11:00 service .

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING
The Session has called a congregational meeting for 10:40 a.m., October 8, in the sanctuary for the purpose of dissolving the pastoral relationship between Elizabeth McGregor Simmons and DCPC, effective October 31, 2017, in order that she may be honorably retired.

Adult-
Covenant (9:45 a.m. Congregation House)
October 8, 15, 29. John Kuykendall, President Emeritus of Davidson College, will present three sessions on "The Mysterious Dorothy Sayers."  Dorothy Sayers, whose mid-20 th century mystery novels about Lord Peter Wimsey made her famous, was also a creative and devout (if unconventional) lay theologian. Like her contemporaries, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, she sought ways of interpreting Christianity in the modern world. Her book, The Mind of the Maker, is an intriguing and perceptive study of Christian doctrine from the standpoint of a creative artist.
