Junior High Shadow Days at Fairmont Prep
In order for your child to better understand what an average day is like at Fairmont Prep, we encourage you to schedule a Shadow Day for him or her. Accompanied by one of Fairmont Prep's outstanding student ambassadors, your student will sit in on classes in his or her area of interest and spend time with peers to hear about day-to-day life at Fairmont Prep. Transportation to and from the junior high campus will be provided, and lunch will also be provided. Permission slips must be turned in to your campus assistant director at least four days before the scheduled Shadow Day, and your student will need to wear his or her regular required uniform on this day. We have various Shadow Day options throughout October and early November. You can access more information by downloading our informational flyer, which also includes the required permission slip. Please see your assistant director to sign up.

School Picture Retake Day
Wednesday, October 11, in the gym
If your child was absent or if you were not satisfied with your child's picture from the original picture day, you can have his or her picture taken on retake day. If it is your child's first time taking a picture, please make sure you get a picture envelope at the front desk. If your child is retaking a picture, you will need to return the original package of pictures on October 11. It is important to return them, as it will allow the photographer to know which package you ordered. Please remember that all junior kindergarten through 8th grade students need to wear their formal dress uniforms and sweaters (or blazers for junior high students).

Upcoming FPA Meeting
Mark your calendar for the FPA meeting on Thursday, October 12, at 8:30 am in the multipurpose room to hear all of the exciting news about the Fall Festival and upcoming holiday plans. Breakfast will be served!

Denim Day
Friday, October 13 ---
the largest single-day fundraiser for breast cancer research

Since Denim Day began in 1996, participants have raised more than $96 million to help save lives from breast cancer. This year, by joining together, we'll add even more to that total. Donations will help the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking breast cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risks or find the cancer early when it's easier to treat.

Please join us by wearing your favorite pair of jeans next Friday. Donations of any denomination will be collected for this event, and all proceeds  from our campus will go to the American Cancer Society Denim Day. The top-earning classes in preschool, elementary, and junior high will receive ice cream parties. Although donations are greatly appreciated, they are not required in order to wear jeans.

Socktober Is Here!
Like last year, it is with much excitement that our chapter of the National Junior Honor Society prepares to kick off its first service project of the year: Socktober! During the month of October, our chapter of NJHS is partnering with LIMBS International to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of children living without stable housing.

We have 25 pairs of socks for sale in the front office while supplies last (25 of each size: kids or adults, girls or boys). If you purchase your socks from the front office, you don't have to wait ---   plus, you don't have to pay for shipping. If you order your socks to be shipped to your house, it ends up being $15.50 instead of $12 for the limited quantity available here at school.

Get your orders in now on our  We Help page!

In celebration of Socktober, students may wear any of the fun LIMBS International socks during the month of October in place of their regular uniform socks.

We hope that you will take a moment to help us play a small part in giving hope to homeless children and amputees around the world. Together we can make a difference, one step at a time.

Sincerely,
Members of the Fairmont Anaheim Hills' National Junior Honor Society Chapter

Writing Chops: Anaheim Hills 4th Grade Student Recognized by Cricket Magazine
Yorba Linda 4th-grader Areesha Nouman recently took third place in her age division (10 and under) in a writing contest held by Cricket Magazine, a publication for short stories, poems, and articles written by children.

Her submission, "An Escape That Came to an End," detailed a plan to escape a boring day at school. While at lunch in her story, she said, "As I chomped on my cheese sandwich, I knew this was the time to put my plan into action. I pushed my chair out and started toward the teacher, but suddenly I realized that school wasn't so bad after all."

Nouman, who was the youngest writer recognized by the magazine, realized that she didn't need to escape because school is actually a great place for her to be.

"My 'escape plan' had become my 'stay plan,'" she concluded, "and I decided to keep learning and enjoying all of the opportunities in front of me."

Getting to Know You: New Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. Candice Lara, Preschool Teacher
Mrs. Lara completed her child development studies at Fullerton Junior College and has more than 20 years of experience with with infants and school-aged children. She has run her own home daycare center and has been a preschool director, as well.

Mrs. Lara loves working with children and knew from the time she was in high school that she would work with children all of her life. She is married and has one son, one daughter, and one stepson. She loves to spend time outside hiking, paddle boarding, and doing anything that has to do with the ocean. She ran her first half marathon this year, which she said was "fun and every emotional." She said that if you've ever run one, then you know that feeling of crossing the finish line.

Mrs. Lara was motivated to become a teacher because of the big heart she has for children and the fact that she wants them all to learn and enjoy school.

"The best thing about teaching is their little voices telling you everything and anything about them and their families," Mrs. Lara said. "I can tell you that the things they try to say will make you laugh!"

Mrs. Lara grew up right here in Anaheim Hills and went to school right around the corner from here. Go Aztecs!

We are so lucky and happy to have such a wonderful preschool teacher on our staff!

Acts of Kindness with Your Young Children

The month of October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Hopefully you have been able to read the posts our school counselor, Jill Thomas, has been writing that provide many insights on character development. This month, at all of our Fairmont campuses, we are emphasizing acts of kindness. With our children, it isn't enough simply to say "be nice." Though we say that often as they learn to navigate relationships with their friends, as parents, we need to go one step further. We need to lead by example and model those positive behaviors for and with our little ones because it can be challenging for young children to understand feelings and their powers to initiate feelings in others.

One way to teach your child the importance of being kind to others is to talk to them about giving compliments. I was at the doctor's office today, and this lovely 83-year-old woman (she volunteered her age) complimented my skin, and just an hour later at the grocery store, a kind gentleman at the checkout lane complimented my outfit. You know that feeling of smiling on the inside so much that it radiates to the outside and puts a really big smile on your face for others to see? That is what I was feeling.

Nothing feels better than when you let yourself smile. Challenge yourself and your child to give an authentic compliment to the next person you see. Less words can often be more powerful with young children. Simply explain that when we are nice, it makes others feel good. You could say, "Watch what happens when [Daddy or Mommy] tells the waiter he is very kind. Did you see him smile? That's how you know you made a difference to that person."

Give your child suggestions of a few ways to compliment someone authentically. The following are a handful of examples you could use:

I like how you drew those details in your picture.
You chose a great game for us to play.
You are a great friend.
You are really good at math.

Then you can teach your child how to receive a compliment politely by having him or her say "thank you" and smile. More often than not, that smile will be contagious. Have a great weekend with your family, and embrace and enjoy the little moments. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for more weekly challenges during the month of October!

A Week of Homecoming School Spirit
This week, Fairmont Prep kicked off its Homecoming celebration with Spirit Week. Each day was a different theme hosted by the different grade-level ASB members. During lunch, there were special food items and activities for the students. During Tuesday's "Athletes" day, hosted by the junior class, students were able to battle with their friends on the lawn in GIANT BUBBLES! On Wednesday, the sophomore class hosted a puppy zoo, and students were able to play with puppies.

Traditionally, the Homecoming pep rally is hosted on the day of the football game. This year, the football game was on Thursday, October 5, at 7:00 pm at Yorba Linda High School, and the pep rally was held during the activity period the same day for the entire school to gather and cheer on their sports team. The cheerleaders performed, and class competition games were played.

So, why all of the fuss over a game? The football game is the main Homecoming attraction because the current students and alumni can attend, providing a huge crowd and lots of energy! During the halftime show, the Homecoming court of princes and princesses, pre-selected by the student body, gathered at the center of the field for the crowning of the 2017 Homecoming king and queen. Congratulations to this year's Homecoming king and queen winners, Alan Lam and Sue Min Shin!

Now that Fairmont Prep has defeated Southlands Christian 37-28, ASB will host the Homecoming dance this Saturday, October 7. It's a time for the entire school to come together and party! Overall, Spirit Week has been wonderful, and it is great to see all of the students involved and participating.
