Children all develop at different rates, so sometimes it's natural for parents to overlook or ignore speech issues. Communication disorders are prevalent in the U.S., and the earlier you diagnose and treat a  speech-language disorder, the less impact it may have on your child's academic and social well-being.

We've identified 12 red flags, so you know when to seek an evaluation of your child's language and speech development. Read more over at our blog.

 It's back to school time
!

Back to school time is an exciting time for JHA! We enjoy getting back to our routines of seeing clients in local private schools, daycares, and in our clinic.

If you would like for your child to be seen for speech, OT, ABA or PT at his/her private school, daycare, or in our office please call 328-2110.

Don't forget the clinic will be closed for Fall Break, October 9-14th. Please contact our office for a make-up session.

Transitioning back to school
The transition from summer break to school can be a scary and difficult transition for children who experience difficulty with social skills or anxiety. Here are some tips that can help:

  1. Arrange "play dates" or outings for your child with peers from the classroom. This will help your child to feel more comfortable and already accepted by peers.
  2. Talk to your child about what to expect. Discuss the back to school schedule and what your child can expect throughout the day at school.
  3. Talk to your child about his feelings and fears. Talking about feelings and fears will help to reduce your child's social anxiety.
  4. Have your child focus on positive aspects of going back to school. Instead of talking about negative aspects, talk about things your child is looking forward to.
  5. Pay attention to your own behavior. Children take cues from their parents; therefore, the more confidence and comfort you can model, the more your child will see and understand that there is no reason to be afraid.
  6. Arrange a meeting with your child's teacher. Meeting with the teacher will help your child feel more safe and comfortable when entering a new environment.
  7. Establish the "school-day routine." Wake up, eat, and go to bed at regular times.
JHA offers a wide variety of social language groups every day! Children are placed in a specific group based on their age and current level of social skills. Our social groups help children to improve their skills to become more socially appropriate with both peers and adults. Contact us at 328-2110 for more details about each social group!
