January 2017 Newsletter
A Note from the Executive Director
It is a new year, and now is the time for the school-based health care movement to show off! February 2017 has lots of good reasons and ways to share the best of what is going on in and with SBHCs. Most importantly, please find a way to celebrate School-Based Health Care Awareness Month in February 2017! Below you'll find the official, national logo for the month and links to other graphics and tools you can use to make your school, community, agency, legislators and others aware of the good work going on. NMASBHC wants to remind you that this also is the month for SBHCs to prepare and submit applications for the Exemplary SBHC Awards. Read on for more information, including instructions for applying. Last year's first annual exemplary award ceremony was an outstanding opportunity to share with the field and others outside it why SBHCs are so important for children and families. I also want to remind you to spend a few moments in early 2017 sharing some stories about school-based health that are most inspiring and important to you with NMASBHC. Please email me any stories or quotes you would allow us to share in educational materials we share with the community, with state and national legislators, and with funders. You can use the prompt, "school-based health care is important because...." I know that SBHCs are improving the lives of New Mexico families, so let's make sure the whole state knows it!
Wishing you a fantastic School-Based Health Care Awareness Month,
Nancy Rodriguez
P.S. Make sure you read all the way to the end to find out about a Nexplanon training for SBHC providers!

February is National School-Based Health Care Awareness Month!
Every February, the school-based health care community celebrates National School-Based Health Care Awareness Month-an opportunity to recognize our success and raise awareness about how school-based health centers (SBHCs) are revolutionizing the way children and adolescents access health care services. NMASBHC and our national partner, the School-Based Health Alliance, encourage SBHCs to celebrate and to use the celebration to educate our community. Please visit: http://www.sbh4all.org/school-health-care/awareness-month/ for numerous tools for participation, such as graphics to share on your social media accounts and announcement of a February 23rd national Twitter chat!

If you have ideas or questions for this feature, please let us know! While we encourage you to ALWAYS read this section of the newsletter, we also hope you will check out all resources, especially those related to Medicaid, as you work to make your SBHC financially sustainable.

February is Children's Oral/Dental Health Month - Tools for Building Awareness
Dental/oral health is part of overall health, and healthy teeth - even baby teeth - are important for life-long health. Preventing tooth decay is critical to overall health, particularly for children. It is estimated that over 51 million school hours are lost due to a child suffering from tooth decay. For free and downloadable resources (such as the one below) to celebrate and build awareness during February, visit: http://www.ada.org/en/public-programs/national-childrens-dental-health-month.

Vroom! A Youth-Friendly Web and App Resource on Early Childhood
Some of New Mexico's SBHCs serve the early childhood population, while still others serve expectant and parenting teens who need support around infant and early childhood resources. One resource those SBHCs may wish to recommend is the recently launched Vroom! This website and app have easy to access and fun activities that parents can engage in with their young children to make the most of these precious years when the foundation for all future learning is happening. The Daily Vroom app helps parents take every day activities like dressing and bathing and turn them into brain building opportunities. Vroom is a non-profit project funded primarily through the Bezos Family Foundation. For more information, visit: http://www.joinvroom.org/.

Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris' Excellent TED Talk: How childhood trauma affects health across a lifetime
The name of Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris is on the lips of many childhood healthcare experts at the moment. Her revolutionary clinic in California looks at how addressing childhood trauma can impact healthcare outcomes. Check out her TED talk to learn more about this approach: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95ovIJ3dsNk. It is a great introduction for those outside the healthcare field as well (e.g. if you need to expand the knowledge of school officials, state policymakers and others to help fund your work).

Nexplanon Insertion/Removal Plan for SBHC Providers - Survey of Interest
Are you trained in providing Nexplanon? Envision New Mexico's LARC Mentoring Program is arranging a free hands-on Nexplanon insertion/removal training provided by Merck. We need your opinion! Please complete the survey to help us know who is interested in the training. Click here to complete the survey. Feel free to forward this survey link to other providers who may be interested.
