SANTA ANA UNIFIED CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY AT FREMONT
  
About 300 people gathered at Fremont Elementary School on October 4, 2017 to celebrate International Walk to School Day. Dressed in pink clothing - in honor of breast cancer awareness - Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) staff, families, Board of Education members and other leaders walked to the school accompanied by city and school district police, Santa Ana High School's Mariachi band and community partners. "Today we're promoting safe routes to school," said Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips in a new video about the event. "To make sure that our kids know there are benefits to being in the community walking to school together and to make sure that everybody in the community knows that we are supporting our kids." SAUSD ACCEPTED INTO NATIONAL NETWORK OF INNOVATIVE SCHOOL DISTRICTS  
  
SAUSD has been accepted into the League of Innovative Schools, a national coalition of forward-thinking school districts organized by Digital Promise, a nonprofit organization with the mission to accelerate innovation in education and improve the opportunity to learn for all through technology and research. It was selected from a competitive national pool of applicants based on its leadership, evidence of results, innovative vision for learning, and commitment to collaboration. "The League of Innovative Schools works to improve outcomes for students and solve the challenges facing K-12 schools through powerful and smart use of learning technologies and research," said Kim Smith, Executive Director. NEARLY 300 ATTEND FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS AT CENTURY
Century High School kicked-off its 2017-18 financial aid season October 3, 2017. Nearly 300 students and parents attended hands-on financial aid workshops led by school counselors and higher education partners, as well as community partners, business partners and alumni. More than 31 percent (119) of the senior class completed and submitted a financial aid application during the two-hour financial aid event. "This is a great opportunity for our students and parents to be able to get the assistance they need with their financial aid applications," said Jonathan Swanson, Ed.D., Principal. "I am so proud that our students can count on an army of our community partners to assist our students with their higher education plans."

MENDEZ NAMED CROSS COUNTRY EVENT CHAMPION 

Athletes from SAUSD intermediate schools recently participated in this year's Cross Country Tournament at McFadden Intermediate School/Thornton Park. Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School was this year's Cross Country Event Champion. For results listed by team and grade level, click here. Congratulations to all!

NEW VIDEOS ON SAUSD VIMEO CHANNEL 

SAUSD-TV staff has been hard at work this week producing new shows for the SAUSD community. New videos include coverage of Chef Daniella Malfitano's visit to Monte Vista Elementary School for a cooking demonstration, the Vegetable Circus presentation at Carver Elementary School, and the Mush for Gold presentation at Edison Elementary School. WANT TO LEARN VALUABLE TOOLS TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED? 
Attend the 24th Annual SAUSD Parent Conference, which will focus on Engaged Families, Successful Students on Saturday, October 14, 2017, from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at Saddleback High School, located at 2802 South Flower Street. This conference is free and open to all Santa Ana Unified School District parents. Free child care and transportation will be provided from SAUSD schools. Check with your School Office Manager for more information, or visit www.sausd.us/parentconference. There will be workshops and a Community Resource Fair.
STATE OF THE DISTRICT BREAKFAST SCHEDULED 
Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips will welcome and address business and community leaders during the upcoming Superintendent's State of the District Breakfast, to be held at 7 a.m. October 13, 2017 at Godinez Fundamental High School. The event will be live streamed, and may be viewed at www.sausd.us.
