Welcome to October! While the United Way campaign kicked off on September 20th
, October is when we're most visible. Many large workplaces hold their fundraising campaigns and events in October. Later this month we reach out to small businesses, retirees, and others. A majority of our fundraising is wrapped up by the holidays or by the end of the year. Chances are that you'll be invited to give sometime soon. So why give to United Way? There are a couple of key reasons that I'd like to mention. When you give to United Way, you're supporting over 40 local programs in the areas of education, financial stability, and health. You don't have to choose only one of those needs. In most cases, families that need assistance are working with multiple agencies and programs to get the help that they need. Another key reason to support United Way is that we try to find ways to fill gaps where we see them. Whether it's rescuing food for local food pantries so that grocery stores don't have to throw it away or providing hot meals to children over the summer, we find ways to connect volunteers to give back to make the community stronger. Our Day of Caring last month saw over 450 volunteers doing projects throughout Muscatine. These volunteers helped at senior citizens homes, local agencies, and city parks. None of this would be possible without the infrastructure that United Way provides. The best part is that 99% of the funds we raise stay right here in Muscatine where they help support local people. We couldn't do any of this without you. So thank you for your support! And thank you for reading.

Overview
The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations, providing programs for young people that build character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship and develops personal fitness. For more than 100 years, Boy Scouts of America has helped build future leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun.
The Hoover District, of the Illowa Council, Boy Scouts of America is headquartered in Muscatine at the Nepple Field Office, 615 Cedar St. Suite 101. The Hoover District Serves over 400 Scouts and their families in Muscatine County and a portion of Cedar County in Iowa. The Hoover District is part of the Illowa Council, which serves thirteen counties in Iowa and Illinois, and is headquartered in Davenport, Iowa.
Scouting Programs in The Hoover District:
Cub Scouts: For boys Grades 1-5, Cub Scouting is the foundation of our organization and involves the whole family as parents pitch in to plan and deliver activities.
Boy Scouts: For boys 11-17 years old, this is the traditional Scouting experience for young men. While there's guidance from experienced leaders, Boy Scouts take their own lead, exploring places they've never been as they dive into the rugged world of outdoor adventure.
Venturing: Venturing is a coed program for young adults ages 13 (and have completed the 8th grade) through 20. Venturing's motto, "Lead the Adventure," reminds Venturers to always pursue life in the spirit of adventure.
Exploring: Exploring is Scouting's hands-on career development program for boys and girls. Exploring Clubs are for middle school students, and Exploring Posts are for students ages 14 (and have completed the 8th grade) through 20. Explorers learn from experts in their fields in local businesses, organizations, and government agencies.

Trinity Muscatine Public Health Spotlight - October is Let's Talk Month

Parents are the primary influence in their teen's life when it comes to decisions about sex. Numerous studies have shown that adolescents prefer learning about sex from their parents. However, for many parents this can be a difficult conversation to have. This is the premise behind Let's Talk Month, a month where parents and other adults can, with as much support as possible, begin to discuss important topics with teens such as sex, contraception, healthy relationships, and pregnancy.
Most parents understand that discussing sex with their teen is important, but sometimes they don't know what to say or how to start the conversation. Here's the good news! If your child is in middle school or high school in Muscatine or a surrounding community, there's a good chance that they are already receiving some type of sexual health education. The conversations have already been started and all you have to do is continue having them!
Trinity Muscatine Public Health currently employs two adolescent sexual health educators who offer comprehensive sexual health education that is medically accurate and age appropriate to middle and high school students in Muscatine, West Liberty, Wilton, and Durant. Together, Trinity Muscatine Public Health educators were able to provide education to roughly 1600 students this past school year. This year that number is expected to reach nearly 2000.
Let's Talk Month is not limited to just parents. Schools, faith communities, community-based agencies, the media, and local businesses can also take an active role in providing activities, resources, and educational programs to support parents and other adults when engaging in these conversations, as well as to support youth in making healthy and responsible decisions about sex. Together we can all assist in providing the information and skills necessary to prepare young people to become healthy and responsible adults.

Imagination Library Spotlight - Varela Family

1. How did you hear about Imagination Library?
When our daughter, Rosa was enrolled into Prek-3, we were given the option for it!
2. What book are you reading right now?
She is obsessed with the Peter Rabbit one currently, so much she has started watching episodes on YouTube! It's also brung joy back to our 6 year old who has mild autism/SPD/anxiety & ADHD. She used to be obsessed with Peter Rabbit and has found the love again.

3. What do you/ your child like about the book?
She "loves the bunny and his stories!"
4. What is your favorite book that you have received through Imagination Library? And why?
She says it's the Peter Rabbit one. I honestly have loved quite a few. The Lemonade Stand one was awesome and I loved the message it gave for kids!
5. What do you like most about reading with your child/children?
I love seeing the excitement on their faces when I read in different expressions. I love listening to each of their perspectives on the story as well.
6. Would you recommend Imagination Library? If so, why?
For sure! I've told a few about it already!
7. Has Imagination Library helped grow your home library?
Absolutely!
8. Anything else you would like to share?
We are just really grateful that we have been able to be a part of this because it's benefited our children and myself greatly.

| Aligned Impact Muscatine's Annual Report |
Aligned Impact Muscatine's first annual report shows that we can improve our community by working better together. Kindergarten readiness, chronic absenteeism, post-secondary completion, and under-employed adults are social issues that sound overwhelming to most people. But to Aligned Impact Muscatine's strategy networks, these issues are a call to action. When AIM's Leadership Council looked at community data, they recognized the need to have cross sector teams working on these four complex social challenges. Read More...

Day of Caring Shirt Designer
|
Saul Ocampo was the winner of this year's Day of Caring Shirt Designing Contest.
|
Over 450 volunteers helped around the community with 54 projects for Day of Caring. Some projects included cleaning up parks, doing yard work at senior's homes, painting at local non profits, and installing smoke detectors in homes. Volunteers did some great work helping out the Muscatine community.

Volunteers helped at
Muscatine Center for Social Action
with a corn freezing event. The frozen corn was donated to the Muscatine Food Pantry. Thank you Monsanto for the generous donation of sweet corn and ISU Extension for the donation of vacuum sealers.

United Way employees spent their lunch at Stanley Consultants serving lunch for their Taste of Stanley fundraiser.

College Access and Success AmeriCorps Position Openings
|
Do you have a passion for education and helping others? Do you want to make a difference?
Iowa College Aid is looking for motivated and passionate individuals to serve in the College Access and Success AmeriCorps Program. AmeriCorps members will be part of Iowa College Aid's Course to College Corps, supporting Iowa College Aid, Muscatine Community School District and other community organizations to expand college-access programming. Corps members will work directly with high school seniors as they navigate the steps of the college-going process and enroll in education beyond high school.
