Scripture Lesson: John 6:25-35
Sermon :
"The Debate"
This Sunday
This week we take a break from the book of John and turn instead to the book of James. James is a letter that was probably written by a scholar in the Jesus movement several generations after Jesus, who named the letter after James, the brother of Jesus. The central idea of the letter is the teaching of Jesus to love our neighbors. The text that we consider for this week from Chapter 2 challenges Christians to live integrated lives, where our faith is demonstrated by our works. The author of James was part of a marginalized community in the midst of suffering and estrangement from the power structures of the day. Our context is so different in the church today. Because of the difference between the church of today and the early church, it is difficult to hear the message of the text by and for those who are not currently in power in the church. However even though it's difficult, that is the message of the text. The marginalized are known to be faithful because of their acts of mercy and love. Their faith, shown through their works, challenges those in power to recognize the grace of God in their lives, and the grace of God through them for the life of the church. It is a call for the followers of Jesus inside and outside the church to seek to live out their faith in every part of their lives. It is a call to live integrated lives where faith and works both testify to the same God, the God of love. It is a call to move beyond laws that hold us back and instead live by the law that frees us for the reign that God, through the Spirit and by the example of Jesus, is unfolding here and now. To prepare, read James 2:14-20.

Green Team ~ New Beginning

The Aldersgate Green Team has begun working again on behalf of God's Creation on projects both local and global. See our new bulletin board on the wall in the Narthex for upcoming events and initiatives. Stay tuned for composting innovations and ways that we can green our use of materials in the kitchen. Church Work Party
Saturday, October 28
Please
join us for a church work party on Saturday October 28 from 9:00am-12:00pm. We will work outside raking, weeding, pruning, etc. Bring your gloves and gardening tools. Families and kids are welcome. Aldersgate has a large, beautiful property which takes many volunteers to maintain. Please come when you can Saturday morning and lend a hand. CPR/AED Class
Saturday, November 4
A CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) class will be held here at the church on Saturday
November 4
from 9:00am to 11:30am. The class will teach current CPR procedures and use of our AED. A certification will be awarded to those who attend and demonstrate correct procedures. Note; certifications from the previous class expire this November. Attendance will provide life saving knowledge in the event of sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack. Church staff, nursery workers, and ushers are strongly urged to attend. Other folks may also attend if there is room in the class. if you are interested in attending, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contacting the church office.

All Saints Day

On Sunday,
November 5
at both services we will remember and honor all the people we have loved and released to God through death in the hope of new life. We invite you who have lost loved ones since last All Saints' Sunday (November 6, 2016) to fill out the Sunday attendance form with your loved one's name and relationship to you. These names will be spoken, a candle lit for each one, we will give thanks for them, and pray for us all as we continue to work through our grief and seek renewed confidence and peace in the promises of Christ Jesus.

The Youth Program has grown so much that Jen Hoerber needs a Youth Assistant to help her plan and implement the youth program. Your help is needed to raise $15,000 to support the annual salary of a Youth Assistant. P

Membership Rolls
It is time to update the church membership rolls. Every year Betty Fredeen, our Membership Secretary, reviews the church membership and mails out letters to members who, according to our records, have not attended Aldersgate or contributed in the last two years. The purpose of the letter is not to push people away but to let them know we are interested in them, to see if they want to remain members, and to keep our membership records accurate. We need your help. The members listed below did not respond to our letter or the letter was returned by the U.S. Postal Service as undeliverable. They will be removed from church membership in the near future if we do not hear from them. If you know them, please encourage them to reply to the letter or contact the church office. If you have any information about them, (current contact information, did they moved away, are they attending another church, etc.), please notify Betty Fredeen (425-746-5113) or the church office.
These people were mailed two letters over the last two years. They will be removed from membership at the November 2017 Charge Conference unless we hear from them.

CROP Hunger Walk
Sunday, October 8
Aldersgate participate in the interfaith
CROP Hunger Walk
this year on October 8th. All are invited to join us for this 3 mile walk to raise money and awareness of hunger throughout the world. The walk starts and ends at the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, 17550 NE 67th CT, Redmond, WA 98052. Registration begins at 1:00pm and the walk starts at 1:45pm. All walkers are invited to partake of a light lunch (donations will be accepted to help pay for the food) at Aldersgate at 12:30pm. More information along with donation collection will be available Sunday mornings on September 24th and October 1st.

Club 345 (3rd~4th~5th Grade)

Kids in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades meet once a month on Sunday evening for food and a fun activity. The next meeting is October 8. We will meet for lunch after church and then participate in the CROP Hunger Walk.

Rummage Sale
Friday & Saturday, October 13 & 14
I believe in miracles!
Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine, an everyday item into something special. I'm looking forward to the Rummage Sale next week when once again I'll witness a miracle, seeing those everyday items that we no longer want, that no longer have usefulness to us, being grabbed up by someone who can re-purpose them. We "reduce and reuse" and also turn those items into cash for our mission and youth programs.
To do this we need HELP!
We especially need help on Thursday Oct. 12th, morning, afternoon, and evening with pricing, and on Friday Oct. 13th, with cashiering both morning (8:30am-12:30pm) and afternoon (12:30-4:30pm). If you have an area of interest or expertise (i.e. clothing, books, tool, linens, house wares, holiday, etc.) and would like to organize that area do let me know. Please call Linda Detering at 425-867-0441 to sign up to help. A BIG thank you to everyone who has already signed up to be a part of this miracle I'm looking forward to working with you.

Meaningful Movies on the Eastside

The October film is "Demon at the Door: Our Heroin Crisis." Join us as we view the film and have conversation about this very important problem in our communities. For eight months, KOMO News investigated the heroin crisis in Seattle. KOMO News Anchor Eric Johnson calls it shocking, devastating and unflinchingly real. "For the better part of a year we've been working on this program. We've been in alleyways and homes and police cars and assorted incarnations of hell on earth. We've peered into the darkness of heroin addiction, looking for answers, truth, and yes, humanity," Eric Johnson says. "It will hurt to watch this. But I believe it is very important. Watch with your children. You owe it to them. Because looking the other way is no longer an option."
The goal of these screenings is to bring the community together to view a film and enjoy a moderated conversation following the film that invites and welcomes all opinions.
Come and join in the dialog! Free and open to the public! There is a suggested donation of $5/person, but no one will be turned away! RSVP's are helpful to plan food, but come anyway if you don't RSVP.

Fall Festival is
October 27th
This fun event has been highly popular with 150+ people in attendance from the church, preschool and community in years past. We will have a hot dog / chili dinner, carnival games and of course our costume parade for all the kids!
If you are can help staff a carnival booth, help in the kitchen, decorate, clean up the night of the event, or be part of the cooking team cooking and preparing food prior to the event, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Jen Hoerber.

Interfaith Build
October 12, 13, 19, 20
It's fall and time for the Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Build. This is your chance to do something about housing the homeless. Habitat is building homes on the Sammamish Plateau and has set aside a block of time for the Interfaith Community. The dates are October 12,13 ,19, and 20. Habitat is hoping for up to 15 volunteers each Thursday and Friday. If you are interested please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Rich Detering for details.
This is also the time to help Habitat financially. The houses are sold at cost the those in need. Our contributions allow Habitat to find new land and to start new homes. Mark your contributions for Habitat and place them in the offering plate.

The Sophia Way Companion Training

In this workshop, you will gain the skills to make a positive impact in the life of a person experiencing homelessness, mental illness, chemical dependency, or other difficulties by serving as a Companion. You will learn how to compassionately and effectively walk side by side with someone in need on their journey towards a better life. Join us on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00am - noon at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 3030 Bellevue, WY NE, Bellevue. This workshop is required for women who wish to serve as Companions through The Sophia Way program. A donation of $25 is requested for registration.

where other Methodists in the area can come and take a tour of the new projects they have started up and even pitch in to help on a variety of projects related to their parking lot ministry for homeless families. As we notice the need in our neighborhood increasing due to increased housing costs and decreased options for low income families, this is a way to educate ourselves about how others in the United Methodist connection have found to respond.
