Animal Rescue Updates

Tofu & Popcorn are thriving at Heartland
Tofu and Popcorn,  two young chickens saved just in the nick of time from the annual Kaporos rituals , are loving the sanctuary life and thriving at Heartland. While they are both still peeping, they have transformed from tiny babies with rough and patchy feathers into fluffy, confident adolescents who absolutely love the company of people. Tofu and Popcorn were bred to grow very large very quickly, so they will remain on a very restricted diet to ensure they stay happy and healthy for a very long time.

Thousands of chickens are sacrificed during Kaporos, and we are so thankful that Tofu and Popcorn made it out alive. They are perfect examples of how curious, affectionate and playful chickens are.

Introducing: Cupcake & Princess
Sweet Cupcake snoozing in the straw
Cupcake and Princess are two potbellied pigs who originally started boarding at Heartland, but will now remain part of Heartland's forever family. Their owner was in a homeless shelter for two months after a domestic violence episode, and then placed in a small apartment where pigs obviously aren't allowed. It has been a very difficult and sad situation for her, but we are thankful that Cupcake and Princess are in a safe and loving place.
Winter Camp at Heartland!

Snow days are much more fun when spent at the sanctuary! Heartland is offering Winter Camp this year for youth ages 8-13. Winter Camp will be held on
December 27th, 28th, 29th, and January 1st and 2nd from 9 AM - 4 PM. Late pick-up at 5 PM is available for an additional $5. Winter Camp tuition is $50 per day, or $200 if you register for all five days (a $50 discount!) Winter Camp will include animal care/barn chores, games, crafts and activities, plus sledding, snow-animal building and more!

Space at Winter Camp is limited! Register today by emailing Camp Director, Sunshine Stokes, at [email protected].
Skilled construction volunteers needed!

Winter is right around the corner and our volunteers are scrambling to reinforce existing outdoor animal shelters and get new shelters built before the snow falls. If you (or anyone you know) has construction/carpentry experience and would volunteer a few hours of your time, our animals would be eternally grateful!

Please email our Shelter Director, Alecia, at [email protected] if you can help! Heartland's project coordinator will be on hand to lead the efforts!
Heartland thanks you!
October Volunteer of the Month: Asako Harkins
Asako started volunteering last year after her two boys attended Heartland's Summer Camp. She volunteers on the Monday morning animal care shifts, taking care of Heartland's many feathered friends. Asako is extremely dependable and knows how to get the job done! She's also up for training new volunteers, which is a huge help to Heartland staff! Many thanks (and quacks and clucks) to you, Asako, for all you do for us! We are so lucky to have you! Read more...

Spoil your pup and help out HFS!
During the month of November, the fantastic folks of Threepaws Gourmet will be donating $1 from every bag of their coconut bacon bones to Heartland! These plant-based dog treats are grain-free, organic, and made right here in Wisconsin! Shop for the adorable coconut bacon bones here.

Animal Spotlight: Gracie the Goose
Gracie was transferred from a local animal shelter to Heartland in 2011 - she was Heartland's first feathered resident! Gracie is the matriarch of the Heartland barn - she has the run of the sanctuary during the day and pretty much does what she pleases. She loves swimming in her pool, honking at Mister the Goose, and is an expert at begging for lettuce at the produce table. We love you, Gracie!
