Sometimes you just need an expert.  Although Christ Covenant is no novice to the  barbecue business, this year we just had to have the help of a couple of ringers to successfully cook and deliver over 2400 chicken dinners.   First on the list of experts was Sam Jones Wood-Fired BBQ (pictured above) who supplied eight grills and grill experts to teach us a thing or two about cooking over a bed of coals.

Lesson number one is you don't rest until the work is done.  These seasoned veterans typically are up the entire night before and work tirelessly to prepare their equipment and perfect the process.  Great tastes take time, and if you rush or are unwilling to pay the price overnight, your will short-circuit the process.  Afterwards, we enjoy the fruit of our labor, or in Sam's case above a brief rest between loads.

Lesson number two is the importance of stoking a good wood fire.  Two barrels burning bright all night require a full stock of wood which cannot be left unattended.  In order for the coals to be ready to cook, someone has to stoke, shovel, and fan the fire into constant flame.  A red-hot, burning fire brings warmth and life to all around.

Lesson three is teamwork.  What impressed me about Sam and his team and all of our cooks, cleaners, plate packers, runners, and delivery drives is that each person fits specifically into their unique role.  If just one part of the process or one person in the line is missing, the whole operation comes to a halt.  But with everyone playing their part, success occurs.

The lessons of wood-fired grilling are not foreign to our education.  Without a doubt our expert teachers give up sleep and comforts regularly to be ready for another day of teaching.  They continually stoke the fires of learning and inspiration of the Holy Spirit in their own lives and in their students.   And finally, each piece of the puzzle must come together to make the picture whole.  From parents to teachers, from JK to seniors, from administrators to janitors, we all work together on one common mission: to love, educate, and equip.

As we celebrate unity and thank our amazing volunteers at this year's Chicken Dinner, may we all savor the simple lessons of hard work, inspiration, and cooperation.  Together they form an expert's recipe for success.

Love Offering Dress Down Day
Lower and Upper School students:  Bring $1 on Tuesday, November 21st to dress down!  All students who bring $1 on Tuesday, November 21 are allowed to wear non-dress code clothing for that day.  All modesty guidelines should be observed (no leggings, no tight/form fitting clothing).  Also, please make sure any clothing messages are commensurate with our Christian values.

We are excited to be able to use the proceeds from this day to bless Mr. Randy Bolling, our lower school janitor.  "Mr. Randy", as most students know him, is not only a staple at our Lower School but spends much of his time promoting and participating actively in daily prayer for our students and staff.  Randy blesses us regularly!  Let's join together and bless him this year!
