Rally for the Grid

Next Tuesday, you're invited to a public rally to show support for the Community Grid as the solution to replace the deteriorating 1.4 mile stretch of Interstate 81 that runs through Downtown Syracuse. Dozens of community groups are expected to join ReThink 81 (a coalition of property and business owners), to call for elected officials to recognize the benefits that the Community Grid would bring to our community.
Of the options the New York State Department of Transportation has provided regarding the future of Interstate 81, ReThink 81 says the Community Grid is the least disruptive to businesses, residents and motorists. It provides increased accessibility to sought-after destinations including Downtown Syracuse, the Carrier Dome and University Hill. The Community Grid is also the most economical solution, as it's the least costly to build and maintain moving forward, presenting the most potential for future growth in our community.
The rally begins at 12:00 pm Tuesday in Hanover Square.

- Kathie Morris, owner of The Changing Room, a specialty women's boutique retail store on South Warren Street, will shed light on how Downtown's retail climate complements its residential landscape. Morris, who first expanded her boutique to Downtown Syracuse about three and a half years ago, has since moved her residential address to Downtown Syracuse. She will be able to speak to what it's like to live Downtown from a residential perspective.
- Vance Lederman, Senior Vice President of Business Operations for the Syracuse Crunch, will share how having an AHL team in Downtown helps infuse new energy into the center of our city. Vance, who has called this community home for 20+ years, will share the humorous story of how he and Crunch owner Howard Dolgan first found themselves in Syracuse, how they fell for Downtown's charms, and the exciting (perhaps surprising) reasons why they stayed.
- John Stage, founder of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que will speak about the early success the Dinosaur achieved in Downtown Syracuse, how the flagship restaurant helped put Syracuse on the map as a culinary destination, and the ways it continues to set an example for the expanding Dinosaur empire.

Stop the Bleed, a free training course offered by Upstate's Trauma Center, takes just one hour to complete in your home or office. The course aims to disseminate basic bleeding control techniques to as many people as possible so that in the event of a tragedy, immediate bystanders can save lives. The course is composed of a lecture and skills station and is designed for people with no medical background. The skills are basic, but critical to saving a life.

The Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) has started a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign and needs your help!
The museum continues to grow with new programs and exhibits, but can't keep up with building repairs such as a leaking roof, HVAC failures and other day-to-day maintenance problems. Built in 1906, the age and condition of the Armory demands resources the MOST cannot currently meet or sustain.
Your donation (no matter how big or small) will help keep downtown's wonderful science museum on its feet. The MOST says the equivalent of one adult admission ticket ($12) will help preserve the museum for tomorrow's doers, dreamers and thinkers.

Familiar Faces to Decorate the Doors of the Oncenter War Memorial
Onondaga County Lawmakers Approve $8.5 Million Renovation
If you go to the Syracuse Crunch game this weekend, you might notice a few changes in the Onondaga County War Memorial. There will be a series of 20 wraps installed on doors around the building, depicting important moments in the War Memorial's history. The first series went up earlier this week, depicting images of Syracuse Crunch players who have made a big impact on the team as well as former players who spent time on the ice with the Crunch before going onto the NHL. In the coming weeks, look for wraps that will commemorate musical acts that have performed within the building (including Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen) and others that mark historic sports figures with ties to Syracuse and the building.
In other Crunch related news - Earlier this week, the $8.5 million renovation planned for the facility was
officially approved. New York State will contribute $1.25 million in grants, and Onondaga County will borrow a little more than $1.3 million against anticipated ticket surcharges (that's the "facility use fee" on your Crunch ticket) over the next 12 years. The facility use fee will stay the same ($2 for Crunch ticket buyers and $.50 for Silver Knights soccer team buyers).

Holly Slept Over Crew Filming in Downtown Syracuse
In & outside of University Building
A little bit of Hollywood came to Downtown Syracuse this afternoon. Film crews were spotted at the corner of South Salina Street and Washington Streets, outside of the University Building. According to Syracuse.com, Josh Lawson (of Anchorman 2 and HBO's House of Lies) and Britt Lower (Sisters and Man Seeking Woman) were filming scenes for the film, Holly Slept Over inside and outside of the building. Holly Slept Over, which began filming in September in Manlius, is expected to be released this spring or summer. The film stars Ron Livingston (Office Space) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones).
