Do You Really Want to Be Our Pastor?
A story about a search committee and a candidate
by  Winn Collier, Christian Century,  September 14, 2017

Hank Pierce and Amy Quitman were neighbors on Rural Route 28. Their mailboxes shared a weathered post at the end of the gravel lane. This seemed fitting, since their families also shared a weathered pew at Granby Presbyterian Church. Hank and Amy-along with Tom, the tire salesman, and Luther, the county's public defender-made up Granby's Pastoral Search Committee. Though a thankless job, their assignment did mean that every Thursday night they'd sit in the church's empty manse, drink Folgers, and enjoy a few minutes shooting the bull. Then they'd return to the pile of résumés that represented the fleeting hope for their beleaguered flock....

THANK YOU!!
What a wonderful Presbytery we have!  The response to our plea to help cover Pat and Truman Geeslin's funeral expense was overwhelming!  Your grace-filled generosity is a testimony to the love and hope we share as people of Jesus Christ.  Thanks to all who were able to give and for all of you have have been praying for the family.

The funeral will be today at 2:30 at Kerr Brothers funeral home.  Please continue to be in prayer for the family.

From the Stated Clerk...
From the Stated Clerk:  Preservation of Church Records

Sometimes I get asked questions about storing and preserving church records.  Records preservation is one of the more important duties of stated clerks and clerks of sessions in local churches.  The Presbyterian Historical Society details the records that churches should keep.  Session minutes and registers (members, baptisms, elders, deaths, pastors, marriages) are of primary importance and should be kept permanently.  Minutes and documents of other church groups (trustees, PW groups and circles, deacons, deeds, titles, photos, etc.) are also considered permanent records.  Check out the website of PHS for more information. ( http://www.history.pcusa.org/)

Individual churches can deposit records for permanent storage. The records remain the property of the local church.  In cases where a church has closed or been dismissed to another denomination, the records become the property of the presbytery and the presbytery retains title.  Transylvania stores historical records at the John Bulow Campbell Library at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA, and the Presbyterian Historical Society in Philadelphia, PA.  If your church would like to deposit old records for archival storage, please contact me and I can help you with the process.  Whatever you do, don't just ship the records to one of the sites!  This offends our sensibilities of decency and order, and generally gums up the works.  Send me an email and I can help.

It's a good idea to deposit old records and you know the records are safe and secure.  Dampness destroys many old documents, and I imagine at least a few of our churches have their records downstairs in an old closet or basement room.  (Whitesburg does, but we're going to work on that.)  You can make copies of the records if you like, or the library or historical society can make copies.  (There are charges for these services.) I'm happy to help our churches consider permanent storage and make all the necessary arrangements.  Give me a call or send an email and we can talk further.

Blessings, Jerry

Happy Anniversay, Three Kings!- LWW Update
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, THREE KINGS!

The small village of Tres Reyes (Three Kings) in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico recently had a party to celebrate three years of successful operation and expansion of the Living Waters for the World water system in their community (installed by the Transylvania LWW team in 2014).  Operator Dany Caamal and his family organized the event, held at Monte Horeb church, where the system lives.  People from the community brought food (nothing like a good church pot-luck!), and there was music and laughter all around.

Dany explained that their water plant now provides safe water to the entire community, and to several surrounding communities as well, and their distribution has expanded rapidly.  "In fact," he said, "we are now the sole provider of safe water in this area, so we feel a great responsibility to keep things running smoothly.  We hope to purchase a generator to ensure that when storms cause electrical failures lasting for days, we can still deliver this essential need."

Happy Anniversary, Three Kings, and THANK YOU for partnering with us in this ministry!

Affirmation of Creation Action
In accordance with the action taken at the 222 nd General Assembly (2016) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and upon the instruction of the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly, the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, the assembly's action on the Affirmation of Creation is being  distributed electronically to all  presbyteries and synods of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  Further, we ask presbyteries to forward this action to sessions so that all councils of the church, per action of the assembly,  can use it for their study, reflection, and, where possible, their approval.
