Help us Purchase a New Kettle
Every day our culinary team prepares 1,000 servings of soup in each of our 60-gallon steam kettles. Medically tailored meals from Community Servings provide our critically ill clients with nourishment they need to improve their health and adhere to their medications. During the month of September we were able to get halfway to our goal to purchase a new kettle.  Please consider making a donation to us replace our aging steam kettle and other kitchen equipment.

What's the deal with those funny looking squashes in the super market and local farmers market?  Well, if they look like the photo above, they're winter squashes! They're healthy, delicious, and depending on the variety, can be stored up to 6 months! Although winter squashes vary in shape, size, color, and flavor, they're all considered a "starchy vegetable" and a healthy source of carbohydrates and fiber. They're rich in Vitamin A (important for skin and eyes) and the seeds are good source of  dietary fiber, zinc, and healthy fats that promote heart health.

Roasted Delicata Squash and
Spiced Nut Crunch
This high fiber recipe combines sweet winter squash, warm spices, and crunchy nuts to make a unique side dish.

Last Friday, September 29, Community Servings looked back twenty years to when we auctioned off a beautiful black velvet dress worn by Princess Diana at the London opening of Les Miserables in 1985. The gown had been purchased by philanthropist, Barbara Jordan at Christie's in 1997 and generously donated to Community Servings.

We auctioned the dress four weeks after the Princess' tragic passing at a sold-out event at the Four Seasons Hotel, in tribute to her moving legacy in the HIV community. As the first piece  of Diana memorabilia auctioned since her death, the event had live coverage from around the world, which was a heady experience for a small AIDS meals program in Boston. In four minutes of heated bidding, the dress sold for $200,000 and provided the funds for Community Servings to buy our first building in Roxbury.

We continue to be so grateful to Barbara Jordan's inspired generosity and lasting commitment to our mission.

Recently our culinary team presented Executive Chef Kevin Conner with a plaque, in recognition of his leadership, astounding example, and hard work. Larry Eason, a Prep Cook who joined the culinary team after completing our Teaching Kitchen program, said, "Thanks for being a friend and mentor, and giving me a chance to prove to myself that the sky's the limit!" Congratulations, Chef! #behindthescenes #teamworkmakesthedreamwork
