...advancing the green hotel movement

Dear Boston Green Tourism Members,

The next BGT meeting will be Thursday September 14 from 2:30 to 4:00 at Cityscapes, floor 9.

Cityscapes designs, installs and maintains the interior plantscapes, exterior landscapes, living walls, living art and holiday decor for many Boston hotels and other commercial buildings.

Cityscapes is located in Copley Square: 197 Clarendon Street, Boston.

I will announce the speakers in the next newsletter.

Tesla Offers Free EV Charging Stations to Qualified MA Hotels

Tesla's Destination Charging Program is adding qualified hospitality-based businesses to its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. Qualified properties will receive free, level 2 Tesla Wall Connectors and financial support for installing them. Tesla might not accept every Boston hotel application, but most BGT hotels would qualify.

Approved hotels and restaurants will be listed on Tesla's Destination Charging map and on their website. They will also appear on the on-board navigation screen in every Tesla vehicle, which directs owners to available charging stations.

The stations must be available to the public, but it's OK to restrict their use to hotel customers.

The typical hotel that takes advantage of this offer would receive three to four Tesla chargers and, if needed, a universal charging station that can serve non-Tesla EV's, too.

Tesla is open to installing more than four units in large properties. And, it would consider supplying free Tesla Wall Connectors for parking garages that hotels use but don't own.

New charging stations will help serve the growing number of EV drivers. Tesla has sold 45% of the EV's in the U.S. this year. Their share of the EV market might expand, because they recently released the moderately-priced Model 3, which already has a big following.

Currently, there are  37 MA hospitality businesses  that have at least one Tesla charger.

The level 2 chargers deliver 58 miles of range per hour.

If you want to discuss this offer for your property, contact Peter Ambiel (pambiel@tesla.com) and reference Boston Green Tourism in the subject line.

Installations will be handled by Barry Woods, Director of Electric Vehicle Innovation for ReVision Energy, an energy transition company that helps organizations deploy clean energy technology  (EV charging, solar, heat pumps).

From Reactive to Predictive: A Shift in Facilities Management Practices
Brian Ratcliff, High Performance Buildings

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects building devices to the internet and each other. When used with associated analytic tools, building managers can identify problems immediately, and sometimes predict their occurrence in advance. "For example, facility engineers can be alerted when a valve is leaking, a sensor is faulty or a rogue heater is left on." The IoT and analytic tools also help reduce energy bills and improve building comfort.

While IoT and analytic capabilities are advancing rapidly, there are some barriers to implementation: installation cost, the lack of personnel to interpret the data, the belief that some buildings aren't suitable for IoT and the concern that the payback would not be sufficiently fast.

The author provided advice about how to plan IoT installations.

This 2-minute video describes the world's first hotel created for cyclists. It's in Malmo, Sweden. While I don't think that the 2nd bicycle hotel will be in Boston, some of Ohboy's ideas might make sense here. For example, it offers foldable bikes to guests, bicycle pumps, wash stations and conveniently-located bicycle tools.
