End of the 1st Quarter
This is the last school week of the 1st quarter for 2017-2018. If your student is behind on any assignments or class projects, please have them turn these in as quickly as possible. Grades will be finalized at the end of this week.

Knight Responders
The club members are collecting pet food for animals affected by the hurricanes. Donations are accepted until Friday, October 13th on the stage in the cafeteria. Kindly donate whatever you are able to share. Please note that OCPS is also working hard as a district to assist the victims of our recent hurricanes - items sincerely needed at this time (when this issue was released on Sunday afternoon only 11% of Puerto Rico's households were back up on their electric grid).

PTSA
We are sincerely blessed to have such a dedicated PTSA. Please take a moment to look at their latest newsletter as well as some of our sharp looking school spirit wear for 2017-2018!

Save the Date: Teach-In is November 15
Each November, in celebration of American Education Week, the OCPS Foundation brings business and civic leaders into the classrooms - in a fun and engaging way -- to talk with students about academics, careers and the future. This year's Teach-In theme is "Great Public Schools - A Basic Right and Our Responsibility." We encourage our parents and community members to speak with our students even if you can only invest time enough for one class.

Please remember Wednesday, October 13th is a full school day and good luck to both of our soccer teams in Monday's quarterfinal matches . . . GO KNIGHTS!

In KNIGHTS Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

5 STAR Award for School Cleanliness

Custodial Team with their 5 Star Award certificates, Resource Team, and Administrative Team

Did you know that research shows that school cleanliness does affect students' academic performance and success? In fact, cleanliness is so important to productivity that it is considered one of the top 4 most important building elements for a school or learning environment. That being said, let's congratulate our custodians for winning the 5 Star Award for Cleanliness: Carlos Bermeo, Pablo Gomez Matias, Carlos Balverdy, Dahiana Guzman Valerio, Eric Ortiz Baez, Juanita Pena Plasencia, and Francisco Zorrilla Pichardo.

Knight Sports
Soccer teams advance to the quarterfinal playoffs on Monday . . .

Winner winner!
The KNIGHTS winning streak continues! Wednesday night both our girls and boys soccer teams dominated the competition, winning with a final score of 3-0 in the playoffs. They will now be advancing to the quarterfinals.

Girls' Highlights
Isabella Bonilla assisted the pass to Valentina Mora for our first goal of the game. Mora went on to score another goal for a total of two goals and Emily Torrez scored our third goal. Great job girls!

Boys' Highlights
Our boys like keeping the ball on one side of the field and that's the offensive side. Tremendous defensive play by Dalton Morgan and the rest of the team. Brandon Nugent scored our first goal of the night. Malachi Perkins finished it up with 2 goals!

Congratulations to both teams and the coaches! Best of luck in the quarterfinals! Our boys' team plays at home Monday against Howard Middle School and our girls play away against Piedmont Lake Middle School.

We are the KNIGHTS!

Knight Rigor

Knight Music with Ms. Rudzik
In Beginning Orchestra class last Friday we held our "Position Fashion Show." Each student walked up to the front of the room while another student played one of our current class songs.  At the front of the room, each student posed modeling the correct way to hold his or her instrument (below).

Knight Reading with Ms. Royer
Students in Ms. Royer's ELA class practiced their literary skills by having to properly place story events on the Plot Diagram Template. Groups competed to see who could correctly place the events on the Plot Diagram Template for all three short stories covered in this first quarter.

SSYRA Book Review of the Week: (Review provided by Goodreads.com)
Shadows of Sherwood (A Robyn Hoodlum Adventure) by Kekla Magoon
The night her parents disappear, twelve-year-old Robyn Loxley must learn to fend for herself. Her home, Nott City, has been taken over by a harsh governor, Ignomus Crown. After fleeing for her life, Robyn has no choice but to join a band of strangers-misfit kids, each with their own special talent for mischief. Setting out to right the wrongs of Crown's merciless government, they take their outlaw status in stride. But Robyn can't rest until she finds her parents. As she pieces together clues from the night they disappeared, Robyn learns that her destiny is tied to the future of Nott City in ways she never expected.

Kicking off a new series with an unforgettable heroine, readers will be treated to feats of courage and daring deeds as Robyn and her band find their way in this cruel, new world.

* Shadows of Sherwood has been a favorite by many of our students who have read multiple SSYRA books. It is the first in a trilogy. We do currently have the second book and the third is on order.
