The Bay Area's TOP Casino
|
|
The Bay 101 Casino held their Grand Opening on Thursday evening, Oct. 12 and received a rousing welcome. The new $53 million building, which spans 68,000 square-feet on North First Street in San Jose, is now Feng Shui certified and uses energy-efficient lighting. "We're very proud of the finished project," said Rich Alvari, the Casino's director of sales, marketing and special events. "The lighting, the open space, the rich wood. The idea was to have a comfortable space; not the glitzy Las Vegas feel." The new Bay 101 Casino, at 1788 North First Street in San Jose, is also home to The Province, a Asian fusion restaurant from the owners of three upscale Santana Row eateries: Sino, Straits and Roots & Rye. |

San Francisco 49ers v. New York Giants
|
Durable 49ers running back Carlos Hyde (28) was again the Niners workhorse, with 17 carries for 98 yards, including a 28-yard romp. With 141 carries for 592 yards, Hyde is quietly on pace for a 1,000-yard rushing season. Photo by Michael Zagaris.

Linebacker Reuben Foster (56) again demonstrated why he deserved to be the 31st overall pick in the 2017 draft by the 49ers, as he menaced New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning throughout the afternoon. Foster finished with six tackles and four assists, just behind safety Eric Reid, who led the team with seven tackles and one assist. Photo by Michael Zagaris.

San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard displayed some agile moves as he ran for an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, putting the game out of reach for the visiting G-Men. Beathard carried the ball four other times and completed 19 of 25 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns for his first win of his NFL career. Photo by Ed Jay. |

Two-time Super Bowl MVP (XLII, XLVI) quarterback Eli Manning of the New York Giants was not treated with deference by an aggressive Niners defensive on Sunday afternoon, which sacked him three times. Despite the harassment, Manning still completed 28 of 37 pass attempts for 273 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Photo by Ed Jay. |

Minutes after winning his first NFL game as a head coach, the 49ers Kyle Shanahan met with the media. First-year coaching assignments are not easy and legendary 49ers coach and Hall of Famer Bill Walsh posted a 2-14 record in his first year. Photo by Ed Jay. |

Stanford Cardinal v. Washington Huskies
|
Sophomore Stanford Cardinal quarterback K.J. Costello (3), in only his third career start, rolled out of the pocket while being pursued by Washington Huskies linebacker Ryan Bowman (55). During their Pac-12 game on Friday night at Stanford Stadium, Costello threw for a career-high 211 yards, without a turnover, to help the Cardinal upset the ninth-ranked Huskies. Stanford junior running back Bryce Love (20) found it tough to penetrate one of the nation's top defenses, yet he still carried the ball 30 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Photo by Darren Yamashita. |

Cal Bears v. University of Providence Argonauts
|
In their first game of the season, Cal senior guard Nick Hamilton (21) saw his team roll over the visiting University of Providence Argonauts, 81-52, at Haas Pavilion on Monday evening, Nov. 6. An aggressive full-court press by the Bears led to eight steals and quickly put the game out of reach. Photo by Ron Sellers. |
|
|
Cal senior forward Marcus Lee (24) exploited his height over the Argonauts defense to score 17 points and pull down 12 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Photo by Ron Sellers. |

|
Another imposing figure on the floor was Cal's 7-1 senior center Kingsley Okoroh (22) who feasted on the defensive side of the floor with 10 blocks, to go along with 14 points and 10 boards for a triple-double. Surprisingly, in 30 minutes of playing time, Okoroh picked up just one personal foul. Photo by Ron Sellers.

Silicon Valley Rugby Sevens Tournament
|
The inaugural Silicon Valley Sevens was held at Avaya Stadium in San Jose on Nov. 4-5. It is a wonderful venue for rugby or soccer, with no bad seats. A turf field -- the ground crew repaired the torn up areas overnight -- and on Sunday it was pristine. (It rained for hours on Saturday, producing some soft footing.) The USA Eagles team ran reliably and defended its way into the final to face Australia, who did the same on their side of the table. On Saturday USA defeated Tonga (29-7), New Zealand (24-12), and Chile (22-14), then in the semifinals shut out England (27-0). During these games, the USA dominated possession when the ball went into the air. The final started with more of the same and just before the half, the USA held a 12-0 lead that looked good but Australia took full advantage of a relaxed defense and scored an unconverted penalty to go into the half behind only by a converted try, 5-12. Ed Jenkins stole the ball early in the second half, spun it wide and scored his second try to bring the score to 12-2. The USA attacked and attacked but were kept out by a stalwart defense. Speedster Maurice Longbottom eluded a tackle at his five meter line and raced to score Australia's third and game-winning try. With a minute left, again on the attack, the USA lost the ball in a ruck and the whistle blew full time. All in all, quite a good weekend with some disappointment in missing the gold ring at the end. Sonoma Raceway
|
After a 30-year career, long-time Sonoma Raceway Drag Racing Manager Georgia Seipel (left) will turn over the reins to her son and fellow drag-racer Kyle Seipel (right) in 2018, as he takes over management of the raceway's quarter-mile drag strip and drag racing operations. The Seipels, including Georgia, husband Ted and Kyle, are considered the First Family of drag racing in Northern California, and are known nationally for their contributions to the sport. "Georgia's legacy at this facility and within the community of racers is truly remarkable. I think half of our racers refer to her as 'Mom,' so it's very fitting that her son should step into the role she has filled so capably for decades," said Steve Page, Sonoma Raceway president and general manager. (Also pictured, Kyle's wife, Dana, and daughter, Syndey.) For more information, visit: www.sonomaraceway.com. |

One Warm Shirt
By Andy Dolich
|
With the holidays right around the corner, our in-box fills up with requests, asking us to give. Your philanthropy supports community organizations that are devoted to enhancing the lives of our fellow citizens around the country.
I have a simple request, whether you live in the Bay Area or any place else,
I want the shirt off your back!
Over the past five years I have been lucky enough to partner with St. Anthony Foundation and NBC Sports Bay Area in expanding our One Warm Shirt program.
We are collecting as many sweatshirts, hoodies and other shirts as possible to donate to the community served by St. Anthony's Foundation. This note is a reminder to either set aside items for a follow-up communication or send to us now. Please feel free to forward this note to any colleagues who might be interesting in helping.
Every single shirt given to a person in need is gratefully received and worn throughout the coldest part of the year. I can personally testify to the wonderful array of sports sweatshirts I see in San Francisco and to the dignified and respectful way in which they are distributed by my friends at St. Anthony's.
The distribution event will be a part of a post-holiday lunch served to the recipients in January of 2018.
Please send what you have, either new or gently used.
All sizes, adults and children, are welcome:
* From the bottom of your drawer
* Storeroom
* Irregular pile
* 18-wheeler
* Locker at the club
* Gym bag
* Attic or basement
* Misprinted logo bin
* Events that no longer exist
* Logos that are too garish
* Colors that drive your stylist crazy.
Send or drop your shirts off to:

Pacific Association Rookie of the Year
Michael Rizzitello -- Catcher -- San Rafael Pacifics
|
San Rafael Pacifics catcher/utility player Michael Rizzitello was honored with the 2017 Pacific Association Rookie of the Year award. Rizzitello has become the first San Rafael player since the league's inception to win the award. "From a statistical standpoint Michael was the logical choice to win this award," said Pacifics president and general manager Mike Shapiro. "He was a linchpin in our lineup all year, and he was the most versatile defensive player we had on the roster." A natural catcher, Rizzitello went undrafted after his senior season at Division 2 Dowling College in New York. The Ronkonkoma, NY native got looks last offseason from the Tampa Bay Rays, but signed with the Pacifics to begin his professional career. Rizzitello hit .280 in 65 games with San Rafael in 2017, hitting five home runs while driving in 40 runs. He was second on the team with 70 hits and third in RBIs. Despite being a natural catcher, Rizzitello also finished second on the team with 12 stolen bases.
