ANNOUNCEMENTS
Join the  Center for Ethics and Public Engagement in a discussion of how indigenous peoples are represented in modern American culture at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, in the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall. Jordan Boge '17, will present research findings from his summer project, "Representing the Other: Disney and the appropriation of indigenous peoples in Moana and Beyond." Anne-Marine Feat and Peter Nekola will comment on Boge's presentation and lead a broader discussion of this issue.  
 
Featuring scenes from "Carmen" and "Don Giovanni," Luther College students will perform "Fall Opera Scenes: Close Encounters" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 17, and 1 p.m. Saturday, November 18, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The performances are directed by Luther professors Deborah Gover, Nicholas Shaneyfelt and Jonathon Struve.
 
Peace Scholar Presentations -- Sunday, November 19, 7:30- 8:30 p.m., Borlaug Room.  The CEPE invites sophomores or juniors interested in the Peace Scholar program to come and hear Billy Jeide '18, Nathan Campbell '18, and Bakhita Soares '18 discuss their Peace Scholar experiences. The program funds two Luther students to study at the Nansen Center for Peace and Dialogue in Lillehammer, and then attend the University of Oslo Summer School. Come and learn all about it.

The Diversity Center will have a Decorah Walmart shopping shuttle running from 2:00-5:00 pm on Saturday, November 18.  This is open to all students and there is no charge, but reservations are requested, please register here. Students should meet in front of the Union.  
 
The Union will be closed November 23-24. Luther will have a Decorah Shopping Shuttle Wednesday, November 22, from 2:00-5:00 to downtown so students can use their meal vouchers from Dining Services. The current Union Gallery Exhibition, "From Parlor to Countryside: Recent Fine Arts Collection Print Acquisitions," will be uninstalled on Wednesday, November 15, in preparation for a pop up gallery show from ART 490, Senior Projects in Process.


RERUNS
Results from the Sexual Assault Climate Survey administered last spring will be presented during a town hall on Wednesday, November 15 from 7-8:30 p.m. in Olin 102. Corey Landstrom, vice president and dean for Student Life and Matt Bills, Title IX Coordinator will share the results and facilitate dialogue regarding the results and their implications.
 
Would you like to enhance your leadership and outdoor skills? Become a leader for the 2018 Immersion Program! Applications are now being accepted for all current freshmen-junior student leaders. The Immersion experiences give incoming Luther students the opportunity to engage in experiential learning, reflect on the natural environment, and share in fellowship with current Luther students. The Asian Studies program is sponsoring a brown bag lunch at noon on Thursday, November 16, in the Mott Room. Cade Bolen, Luther class of 2017, will talk about the importance of Asian studies and Sukeji Jeffrey, Luther class of 2017, and Tatyana Saranina, Luther senior, will discuss the practice of Chinese medicine in Japan.
 
Uncle Tom," the "Mammy" and the "pickaninnies" are all racial stereotypes commonly used from the pre-Civil War era until the start of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. The Emmy-winning documentary "Ethnic Notions" examines these and more anti-Black stereotypes that permeated popular culture and were perpetuated by mass media. The Diversity Center is sponsoring a showing of the documentary at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 12, in the Dahl Centennial Union, Mott- Borlaug Room. Novian Whitsitt will facilitate a discussion following the screening.
 
The Luther College Center for Sustainable Communities is hosting the documentary screening of "Waking the Sleeping Giant: The Making of a Political Revolution" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 15, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206.
 
Price Fishback, the Thomas R. Brown professor of economics at the University of Arizona, will present the annual Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar lecture on "The Long Term Trends in Social Welfare Spending in the United States and Nordic Counties" at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 16, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206.
 
Luther College Chamber Orchestra will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, November 16, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Chamber Orchestra will perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F major, Op. 93. Accompanied by Luther Instructor Miko Kominami on piano, the ensemble will also perform Mozart's Piano Concerto in C major, KV 467.
 
Alfredo Alonso Estenoz, Associate Professor of Spanish, has released his new book  Borges En Cuba to the Book Shop. Stop in and pick up a copy today and congratulate him on the endeavor.
 
New Autographed Book -- Did you miss the lecture and book signing by Ryan Sallans? He signed a few copies of his book, Second Son, so you would not miss out.Ryan also left us a few copies of What is Normal Anyway, by Morgan Boecher.
 
Advent Calendars -- Advent calendars are in stock in the Book Shop. Supplies are limited so come quickly.
 
November 13-17
Luther College will be celebrating International Education Week with several events, co-sponsored by Student Senate and the Center for Global Learning. Tuesday, November 14, is a screening of The White Helmets, followed by a discussion panel with faculty and students at 7 p.m. in Valders 206. Thursday, November 16, is the Projects for Peace presentations at 7 p.m. in Mott Room. Saturday, November 18 is World Cup Soccer at 1 p.m. in the Regents Center. Saturday night is the global potluck at 6 p.m. in Farewell Lounge.
