That's a Wrap!
Thank you so much for all of your support for the 2017 Hop-a-thon!   Our goal was $13,000 and we hopped our way to $20,431.01 - UNBELIEVEABLE.  We are so grateful for this amazing community  - we couldn't have done it without you all!

Pants Needed!
With rainy, soggy weather, comes unfortunate meetings between students and puddles.  :)  Right now, we are looking for leggings - specifically girls sizes 5T to 8 so if you are cleaning out closets, we would be thrilled to take old leggings off of your hands. 

It's Stillwater Book Fair Time!
The Scholastic Book Fair is HERE, November 13-21st! We NEED your help to make this event successful! If you are interested in helping out during the Book Fair, please sign up for a time slot(s) by clicking HERE!
 
The students LOVE the Scholastic Book Fair and proceeds from this event help provide great titles for our Stillwater Library and individual classrooms! Thank you in advance! Get a head start on your Christmas shopping at the Book Fair!

Highly Capable Services
TIME TO NOMINATE STUDENTS FOR - Highly Capable Services and Program for the Academically Talented
The Riverview School District will be accepting nominations for assessing students for Highly Capable Services, including the Grades 2 - 5 Program for the Academically Talented (PAT) for the 2018-19 school year. All first grade students will be screened in January to determine their eligibility, so no first or kindergarten students need to be nominated.
Parents can opt-out of the Highly Capable screening for their children by completing the opt-out form. This form will be given to parents at conferences or sent home with your 1st grade child.
All parents who wish to refer their 2nd through 11th grade children may pick up a nomination form in the school office starting November 17th to be turned in by December 15th (the final day to nominate a student). No late nominations or outside (private) test scores will be accepted. Those elementary students who meet the criteria on the screener given during the school day at their home school will be invited to take the full Cognitive Abilities Test in February 2018.
The goal for Highly Capable Services is to support and provide appropriate academic challenges to students with extraordinary ability in English/Language Arts or Math.   
DATES TO REMEMBER:
  • December 15th - ALL Highly Capable Nomination Forms Due in the HiCap Office at Carnation Elementary School
  • Round 1 - January 2018, CogAT screener administered during the school day at students' home schools
Those who meet the criteria will move on to take the full CogAT test
  • Round 2 - Late February CogAT test for those who qualify from January screening (date and time to be announced)
*If a child is ill or unable to attend a screening or testing session, parents must contact the HiCap office to schedule a make-up test. No outside test scores will be accepted.

What are the feathers that my student keeps talking about?
As students demonstrate the Hawk Mindset at school - as seen above in the Mindset poster that are all around the school, they have the opportunity to earn Hawk Feathers. These Hawk Feathers are recognition that they are making great choices and working to create a safe and respectful environment where everyone can thrive. We will have weekly drawings to reward students who earned Hawk Feathers and invite them to have lunch with the Principal on Mondays as well as different classroom incentives they brainstormed with their teachers.
Postcards!
Along with the new feather initiative, our staff is also sending out postcards of encouragement to students that are demonstrating the Hawk Mindset.  At our staff meetings every other week, our first order of business is for us to write a quick note to a student. 
Field Trip Fees
Fees have been applied to students for the following events:

Kindergarten:  Story Book Theatre 11/30 - $11

2nd Grade:  Story Book Theatre 11/30 - $11
 
5th Grade:  Camp Waskowitz 5/22-5/25 - Varied Fees depending on fundraising.

Weapons
State Law (RCW 28A-600.420 and School District Policy 3200 prohibit the possession of firearms and weapons at school.  This law pertains to guns, knives, clubs, firecrackers, and explosives.  Dangerous weapons also include toy or "dummy" or look-alike objects.  The full text of the law and the definitions of dangerous weapons, as provided RCW9.41.250 and RCW 9.41.280, are on file in the school office.  Possession of firearms on school property will result in a one year mandatory expulsion, subject to appeal with notification to parents and law enforcement. Any violations of these guidelines by students constitutes grounds for expulsion from the Riverview School District and the public schools of the State of Washington and Board Policy.
