New Opportunities to Advance Your Learning
"Jump Start" Your Efforts!
The Tobacco Health Systems Change Jump Start Program encourages your providers and staff to re-engage in tobacco cessation work by thinking about what they can do to support patients and to get them talking about the quit process in a different way. For a limited time we can provide up to two short, expert-facilitated sessions at your clinic on the following topics:
- Medication and Nicotine Replacement Therapy Education
- How to Talk About Tobacco Without Lighting a Fire
A Testimonial from People's Center
The Jump Start training gave our staff the opportunity to discover new ways to ask age-old questions about tobacco in a different and non-threatening way. Because of the relaxed format, we were able to explore how to ask questions during the rooming process and explore different forms of tobacco.

Tracy Lee |
One topic that was heavily discussed was
hookah, a water pipe used to smoke special flavored tobacco. It created an "Ah-Ha" moment for some as they did not know to ask specifically about this.
Medical Assistant Tracy Lee commented, "I didn't know some of our patients smoked hookah. Now, I make it a point to ask patients if they use tobacco products and give examples - chew, cigarettes, hookah, etc."

From the Field
CentraCare Health: A Case Study
In 2012, 13.8 percent of CentraCare's patients - approximately 27,000 people - reported current tobacco use. Given the large number of tobacco users and substantial impact of tobacco use on health, CentraCare proposed to implement a systems change approach to reach and extend treatment to all tobacco users they serve.
Its goal for this grant was to establish an innovative approach to treating tobacco dependence that would serve as a model for health systems across the country.
Key strategies employed were:
- Integrate tobacco dependence treatment into other health system priorities
- Improve systems for tobacco user identification, treatment, and outreach
- Improve clinician capacity to deliver evidence-based treatment
