The Klezmer Survivalist
A KlezCalifornia Klezmer Workshop & Jam
October 15, 2-5pm
Join Josh in this class to learn how to "fake it" with artistry, whether in a jam session, at a party, or playing for dancing. Josh will teach the phrases you need to know to improvise when you don't know a tune and how to string out improvisations from almost nothing. He will reduce the klezmer canon to beginnings, endings and transitions and teach ways to keep the music going when you have no idea what else to do. Participants will learn about ornamentation, melodic variation, fills and bass lines. He'll tackle techniques for on-the-spot arranging, teach secrets for creating and maintaining musical energy, and, if you are a performer (and even if you are not), develop bandstand communication techniques. Students will learn useful ways of practicing based on Josh's gentle and methodical ear training. Josh always tries to make everything accessible to everyone present.
Participants of all ages welcome. Must be at least intermediate level on any acoustic instrument. No klezmer experience needed (but it doesn't hurt!). Mute required if you are a brass player. Bring a recording device if you wish.
