October 8, 2017

Dear Animal Lovers, Advocates, Rescuers & Activists:

October 8th? That's just plain crazy...Another Hurricane coming to the deep south today... More animals will be imperilled; more will perish; more will need saving. Please consider donating even the smallest amount ... so many natural disasters... so many animals affected therein... Every time this happens, I get sick to my stomach and in my mind, thinking about the animals being subjected to such harrowing events, at the mercy of plain old human excess and greed...

What did I do this week to mitigate climate change? I purposely recycled and composted. I did another inventory of household products for toxicity. This week, I'm getting after my tenant for better recycling practices... And I've switched over to all natural (that's not a platitude, that's reality) soap to wash my clothes (bless you Cara Melbye for your awe-inspiring laundry soap...) Over-consumption is no issue on this end, lol, there's simply no money for mass consumerism in this household... yet, there are always ways to improve, and improving is always on my mind...

Please keep thinking of new ways YOU and your family and friends can improve on good old "reduce" "re-use"  and "recycle" best practices. Please don't just let this drift in one ear and out the other ... Challenge yourself to come up with new ways to do better. It's gotta come from us. Get it into the weekly calendar! Magic isn't going to happen. And if we don't make it happen, we definitely are looking at the 6th mass extinction.
"...Wildlife is dying out due to habitat destruction, overhunting, toxic pollution, invasion by alien species and climate change. But the ultimate cause of all of these factors is "human overpopulation and continued population growth, and overconsumption, especially by the rich", say the scientists...
And ... we ARE rich. In Canada, no matter how much each individual household struggles (and we do struggle), we ARE the rich. We need to think on that. And as Canadians, we are uniquely poised as role models for sanity and democracy.

Can I just say it again?  IT'S UP TO US.

BREAKING NEWS

Check out some of the new by-law changes in Toronto for dogs YAY Toronto Animal Services! Coming our way in March 2018...

Saint Lawrence Seaway -- blunt force trauma, hit by ships, all due to human activity. This has got to stop. There's less than 500 of them left. What's it going to take?

Spike in leotospirosis! Yikes!

"... In a key step forward in animal protection, the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology last night unanimously voted in favour of S-214, the Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act. The proposed legislation will now move to debate and a final vote in the Canadian Senate. If the bill passes this stage, it will proceed to the House of Commons..."  A good step indeed, but still needs to pass final Senate vote ...so don't get too excited. Yet.  And maybe write your Senators?  (Ed note: things don't change unless WE change them)

ANIMALS & RESCUERS IN NEED

Meet Billy the Cat. Billy recently befriended some nice neighbours in Toronto, enjoying barbeques and warm summer evenings with them but as it is getting colder, they would like him to find a great and warm forever home. This handsome and charming lap-warmer is 2 years old. He is recently neutered and up-to-date on his shots.  He is affectionate and loves people.  For more information about Billy who is currently being fostered in Toronto, please contact Lu-Anne by Email:

Saskatchewan and Alberta allow wild animals to die painfully from poisoning, and Health Canada licenses the poisons for this cruel use. We need your help to stop this.
Contact Canada's Minister of Health and the Premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Urge them to ban cruel poisons. Here's all the info needed to reach out: https://www.animalalliance.ca/help-ban-poisons/

UPDATES ON RESCUES

Have you read about the Sato Project in Puerto Rico? Now, THIS is community! This powerhouse group has been on Dead Dog Beach for some years now, logging, monitoring and medicating (where necessary) every dog on the beach; providing emergency vet care; focusing on prevention through spay/neuter programs; coordinating flights for dogs to JFK/Newark, where volunteers funnel the dogs to homes, fosters, and sanctuary partners. Truly remarkable work!

More info here on how Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)  is helping the wild horse population in Puerto Rico, bless their hearts. Good to know the dear horses are being provided with support...  HSUS on the ground in Puerto Rico tending horses...

Fall is always a busy time with fairs and events-a-plenty, before we're all boxed up for the winter... It's amazing to see so many people orchestrating so many events for the wellbeing of animals! Stella and I bow to you all, for your incredible efforts, your ingenuity and your commitment!

Give me life, give me love, give me peace on earth, give me hope for this heavy load...trying to touch and reach you, with heart and soul...

For all the Brothers Wilbury, with the utmost respect, admiration, and love, mitch
