NASW Puerto Rico Chapter Details Dire Situation on Island

On October 3, NASW Puerto Rico sent NASW National a series of
cellphone text messages describing conditions on the island, from lack of power and water to suicides, and asked that NASW let social workers and others know of their plight. NASW will convey the Chapter's message to members of Congress who are social workers.

Also, we are pleased to announce that there is now an avenue to donate to the relief efforts.  Donations made to NASW's Social Work Disaster Assistance Fund will go directly to social workers and/or social welfare organizations who can provide assistance to the people of Puerto Rico, as well as the Virgin Islands.

Support a Clean DREAM Act

DACA Program Has Expired

On October 5th, 2017 the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program officially began to expire after President Trump failed to renew it. Those who will lose protections, known as Dreamers, are individuals who were brought to this country as children and have known no other home. A fter voluntarily providing the government with personal information under the promise of an eventual path to citizenship, th ey are now living in fear of being targeted for deportation.

Democrats have proposed the DREAM Act to protect these individuals and offer them the path to citizenship they have hoped for. However, the Act is under attack by Conservatives who hope to erode the protections  afforded by it. They have also requested increased funding for deportation efforts and proposed a grossly insufficient alternative, called the SUCCEED Act.

We urge you to advocate for a clean DREAM Act and NO additional funding for Trump's deportation efforts.

PACE Endorses
"Flip The 39th" Candidates

NASW's Politcal Action for Candidate Election is proud to endorse Linda Schwager for Senate and Jannie Chung and Annie Hausman for NJ Assembly in the 39th legislative district. These candidates have teamed up to "Flip The 39th," a staunchly Conservative district where signs of a progressive change have begun appearing.

Although it will be a tough race, a success here would be incredible for social workers and the clients we serve. Two of the current republican legislators, Gerry Cardinale and Holly Schepisi, have been particularly damaging to many of our key bills. Assemblywoman Schepisi has recently led the charge against the Mont Laurel Decision and Fair Share Housing in the state of NJ.

To volunteer with the campaign, fill out this electronic form and mention NASW-NJ in the subject line.
