It's Back! The Saturday Morning Market
The Saturday Morning Market reopens for it's 15th season on October 7th! The market is in the 'heart' of St. Pete and runs every Saturday from 9-2pm in the Al Lang Field parking lot (the corner of 1st Street and 1st Avenue S).

SHINE Mural Festival
 
 
SHINE St. Pete Mural Festival kicked off on Thursday, Oct. 5! The festival transforms St. Pete's streets into a curated, open-air museum showcasing large scale murals painted by world-renowned artists in downtown and surrounding art districts.

Governing: For This Politician, Poverty Is Personal  
   
Kanika Tomalin is the deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, Fla., but she doesn't see herself as a politician.
 
She was appointed to the job in 2013 and says she never had her sights set on becoming a public official. Her family has been in St. Petersburg for five generations, and her family members span across socioeconomic lines. That vantage point, she says, gives her a unique understanding of deep-rooted issues around generational poverty and health disparities, which she's spent her tenure trying to eradicate.

St. Petersburg Collegiate High School at St. Petersburg College has been recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School National Blue Ribbon for 2017 by the U.S. Department of Education.

"It's time for action, for change, for constructive movement, for a goal of ending racism and empowering women," Deputy Mayor Dr. Kanika Tomalin said during her powerful and timely speech. Her words brought the audience to its feet for a standing ovation at Women of Color Leading Change.  
 
The event held a the University of South Florida St. Petersburg in the Grand Ballroom filled to capacity with professional women of all colors, races, and occupations. Mayor Rick Kriseman was also in attendance. The unparalleled gifts and expertise of the panelists was astounding.

After a lengthy debate, the St. Petersburg City Council passed a potentially groundbreaking ordinance, one that would limit the influence of PACs and Super PACs in city elections, by a 6-2 margin.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: 'Smart parking' is on its way to downtown St. Pete 
   
Drivers in downtown St. Petersburg will soon be able to use a mobile app to find parking.
 
St. Petersburg City Council members approved Thursday a three-year agreement with the tech company   Streetline  to install on-street sensors throughout downtown that provide notifications of when parking spaces are available.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg walking tours resume 
   
St. Petersburg Preservation will launch the new season of its new walking tours Saturday.
 
The tours, which will be conducted Saturdays through April, will include downtown, the waterfront and historic neighborhoods. They will start at 10 a.m., except for the Historic Gulfport tour, which will begin at 3 p.m., and last for two hours.

Tampa Bay Times: Is the Sunshine City headed to the U.S. Supreme Court? St. Pete passes historic campaign finance limits, faces likely legal challenge 
   
After four hours of debate, the St. Petersburg City Council voted to become a pioneer in local campaign finance reform Thursday and likely invited a legal challenge that could end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.
 
A measure championed by City Council chairwoman Darden Rice and supported by Mayor Rick Kriseman, currently locked in what has become by far the most expensive race in the city's history, would limit individual political action committee contributions to $5,000 and ban donations from companies that are more than 5 percent foreign owned.

After debate and soul searching, a majority of St. Petersburg council members voted to ignore the advice of  their attorney and limit the amount of outside money that can flow into city elections.
 
The new rule not only limits the amount of money municipal candidates can receive through "super PACs," it also bans political contributions from corporations that have substantial foreign ownership.

I Love the Burg: With Wednesday Win, Rowdies Head to Playoffs  
   
Among a breezy fall-like October night in front of a crowd of over 5,000 , the Tampa Bay Rowdies secured their place in the 2017 playoffs.
 
The team's regular season home finale, unusual for a Wednesday night, ended in a 3-1 win against the New York Red Bulls, moving the Rowdies into second place among the USL's Eastern Conference, clinching their space in the upcoming playoffs.
