From The head of school

Thank you for Filling Out the Forms!

Dear Académie Lafayette Families,

Thank you to the many families who completed the Federal Programs Free and Reduced Meal forms.  Every form completed increases the possibility of additional federal dollars to support our school.  And, for families who qualify, they will receive services that will make their lives easier.

I am pleased to tell you that 13 classrooms will receive an ice cream party because of 100% participation.

Thank you for your strong support of our school in so many ways.

Sincerely,

Elimane Mbengue
Head of School

Parent Teacher Conferences

Dear Parents,

Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up in a couple of weeks. Your attendance at a parent-teacher conference can make a big difference to your child's success in school, especially if you take some time to prepare. Here are a few tips for a successful parent-teacher conference.

For the best outcome:
* Set up an appointment. If the available conference times don't work for you, contact the teacher to ask about alternatives.

* Ask the school office about getting an interpreter if you are not
comfortable speaking English. We are an immersion school after all and our capable teachers speak a number of languages.

* Ask your child about his/her experience in the classroom so far. What is or is not
going well? Is he/she concerned about anything? Let your child know you
look forward to working with the teacher.

* Write down your questions. You may want to ask about your child's
work habits, or how he/she gets along with the other students. Write down
anything you want to tell the teacher about your child, too. We truly want to partner with you and really getting to know your child is imperative.

* Listen attentively during the conference. Keep an open mind as
the teacher expresses his/her views, which may be different from yours. Again, this is especially true for our international staff.  Ask about what are the expectations and how you can help, and share the teacher's ideas with your child.

* Stay in touch with the teacher throughout the year to see how your child is doing. apple-sm.jpg Always let the teacher know if concerns arise.

Have a great conference,

Leslie Houfaidi

8th Grade Parent Alert! hoodie

Your 8th grader should be coming home with an order form for the custom hoodie that has become a tradition.
Orders are due Monday, October  9, so that students can have their sweatshirts by the end of the month.
STUCO facilitated the decisions and it will be the same French Terry hoodie as last year but in the heather blue color shown on the order form. They are unisex adult sizes XS to XXL. Consider minimal shrinkage but account for your kiddos still growing. Last year we had several families order 2 up front because they literally wear these  everyday.  The cost will be $20 like last year. That pays for one sweatshirt, and helps defer the cost for families in need. Any extra money will go into the 8th grade trip fund. Payment can be made in cash, or check. Buddy Benchesbuddybench

Our Girl Scout Troop 1519 would like to introduce the Buddy Bench! We have built two benches, one for each campus. The Cherry bench will be installed in late October; Oak's will be installed after construction is completed. These benches are to be used by the students when they are feeling lonely, excluded, and or just want someone to play with or hang-out. Please share the following Buddy Bench rules with your children, using our simple acronym: ASK.

"A" is "Always Help" - this essentially means if a student sees someone on the Buddy Bench, they should go talk with them and see how they can help.
"S" is "Sit Only When Needed" - this rule is important so the Buddy Bench is used only for its intended purpose, not a casual place to sit and chat.
"K" is Keep it Beautiful - We have put a lot of effort and money into these benches and would like them to last many, many years, so no drawing, scratching paint, etc.

Please help your kids make our school a better place for everyone!

Thank you!

CEAM advocates for Charter Schoolsceam

There is current legislation going through the Missouri State Senate so that all kids
across the state can have access to charter schools. Soon, there will be a bill that addresses some of the funding that charter schools  receive  within our state. All of these actions need our support. Monique Hall and Leslie Kohlmeyer both of whom are 8th grade parents, recently attended a seminar on how to become and advocate and to work with lobbyists on behalf of this legislation. They attended along side parents of kids in various charter schools across KCMO.
"It is as easy as simply telling your story and how our school has changed the lives of our children. I love everything AL has done for my family. I'm grateful to get a chance to repay some of that," said Leslie Kohlmeyer.
