UA Graduate Class visits Remnant Parcels
Park Avenue to Santa Rita |
They visited, they created, and now they will present to the neighborhoods. The UA graduate landscape class was given the assignment of the remnant parcels. The coalition (of 5 contiguous neighborhoods) asked them to consider how landscape could help mitigate the effects of the six lane highway.
They will present their concepts at the Ward III office on Tuesday, November 28 at 6pm. If you are interested in what they have recommended and what is possible for the remnants, attend this meeting.
One or two of their ideas might be presented to the city as a possible solution to the mitigation issues for Jefferson Park homes. Additionally, the coalition with the city has submitted a grant to the AZ Forestry division to help fund a linear green space along Grant Road that well might extend east beyond Santa Rita..

A great success for two great neighborhoods!!
Jefferson Park received 15% of the T-shirt profit and Old Fort Lowell Live -at-Home Program received 15% . Jefferson Park also had tables of crafts and treasurers.
Preliminary accounting after all deductions: $3359.22 (Sabaku T-shirts) + $542 (Crafts) = $3926.22 for Jefferson Park projects.

We asked one of the little Free Library monitors if they have noticed any activity around the library. Ken's response:

Want to green and shade your yard?
|
Research shows that traffic slows when driving on tree-lined streets. Research shows that there is an inverse relationship between the amount of crime and trees. As the number of large trees increases, crime decreases. Part of the reason is that trees signal to potential criminals that a neighborhood is better cared for and the residents are more involved and will be out walking more, so a criminal is more likely to be caught. This is not to mention the other effects of trees - cooling our streets, producing oxygen, reducing storm run off. lowering noise and air pollution, making our streets more walkable, etc.

DUMPSTERS ARE GONE - STILL NEED SOME HELP?
A special trash collection can be ordered any time by calling Customer Service at 520-791-3171. Consider ordering a special pickup if you have a large quantity of bulky refuse that you are unable to take to the landfill and your Brush and Bulky service is not scheduled soon.
Fees for Special Collections are:
- $30 for up to ten cubic yards plus $25 for 15 minutes of collection time-- $55 total.
- $25 for each additional 15 minutes of collection time and $5 for each additional cubic yard.
If you have trash collection at the curb, place special pickup items on the curb.
If your service is in the alley, place items at the back of your property. Please set items at least five feet from any obstacle.

From the late 1800's people came to Tucson for its restorative climate. On Adams Street was the Comstock Mission and "TB tents" extended into what is now the Jefferson Park Neighborhood.
"Reverend Oliver E. Comstock, a sometime newspaperman, printer, and Baptist preacher opened the Comstock Mission, later and better known as the Adams Street Mission. Comstock had
come from Tennessee because one of his

10 children had contacted tuberculosis; he financed the start of his healing ministry with life insurance from another who dies early. Comstock's whole later life was marked by a care and concern for the tubercular invalids that no one else in the community demonstrated.
From his mission--at first, three tents--he supplied food, blankets, clothing, soap, towels, hope , and encouragement..."

The Non-Profit, Friends of Jefferson Park, Inc. is working on a history of the neighbor- hood including oral histories. They hope to share the re- search and the photos as a final project in book form. Until then, bits and pieces will be published here for your consideration.
"
Dobric's "Monterey Grocery" store was not only a resource for emergency grocery goods, but an attraction for neighborhood children. (My) children were allowed to select candy from Dobrick's on their way home from school and it was added to a monthly tally, which (I) paid at the end of the month. (I) did, however, have to put a stop to the practice when (my) children generously included candy for all their friends on their tally, too."

Neighbors may salvage historic buildings before they are demolished-dates changed

Attention Jefferson Park Neighborhood Neighbors:
During our planned area development neighborhood outreach meetings, some of you expressed an interest in obtaining items from the properties to be demolished as part of our expansion project. We committed to making this happen and your opportunity is coming up.
On November
29th and 30th the properties at 1802 E. Lester and 1812-1816 E. Lester will be open from 8:00AM to 4:00PM. If there are items inside the house such as doors, cabinets and hardware, or casement window parts you could use in your house, you may request these items on a first-come/first-served no-cost basis.
A supply of adhesive stickers will be in each property. You may tag items you wish to obtain. Banner Health and their contractors will remove the items and you will be notified when you can pick up the items you requested.
