Colorado Gives Day

We can hardly wait for December 5th!  Why?  It's Colorado Gives Day - a statewide day of giving to your favorite non-profit which we hope will be Safe Harbor Lab Rescue!  The Labs are wagging their tales over a brand new feature: Kids for Colorado Gives. Check it out on our Colorado Gives Day profile.  More next month, but this is a BIG day that has a significant impact in helping with the medical bills of our Labs.

Dear Labby: Ghosts, Goblins and Princesses, Oh My!
Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters Labby from both four and two-legged folks.

Dear Labby,

Last October some really weird creatures came to my house : skeletons, zombies, princesses, and even a walking pumpkin! All were carrying a bag of deee-licious smelling things. They said something about tricks and treats when my dad opened the door. I did my best trick, but didn't get a treat. What's going on?

__________________________

Dear Miss Haley-

It's time for Halloween! People dress up and get treats from their neighbors, not for tricks like rolling over or sitting pretty, but for dressing up -- silly humans. While it's fun for people, we pups can get ourselves in a pickle. So take you parents aside and remind them:
  • Chocolate makes us sick and so does the sweetener xylitol that's found in candy, gum and baked goods. Both are poisonous to us. Yes, the ER is open all night, but we don't want to go there.
  • Constant doorbell ringing makes some of us go bonkers, get stressed out and not be our normal sweet selves.
  • With goblins standing in an open doorway we may bolt, so make sure we are tucked away safe inside and have our collar with current ID on.  Being lost in the dark is no fun and dangerous too.
  • If you just have to dress us up, make sure we can see and like being dressed up.  We would prefer not to be dressed as a cat!
  • Suggested not-too-scary bedtime reading: "Dogzilla" by Dave Pilkey.
Love,
~Labby

New Beginnings: Jackson FKA CB
CB is now Jackson, and this dashing and delicious 5ish-month-old chocolate puppy is happily settling into his new home with Jodi and Ryan, where he is quickly learning that life is grand when you're a well-loved family Lab. Jackson adores his new parents, but his true BFF and partner-in-fun is his new human brother, Wesley. These two lucky boys can look forward to many years of companionship, love, laughs, a few shared secrets, and always learning from each other as they grow up together.

Jackson's new family sent us an update:   "We brought Jackson home July 28th.  He had an amazing foster-mom. She sent videos and pics the week we were picking him up, which helped us learn about his personality.  Jackson adjusted very quickly to our home and is such a good boy.  I have an 8-year-old son, Wesley. The two bonded immediately and are found playing and chasing each other every day.

Wes is taking some of the lead on training.  Jackson has learned basic commands as well as crawl and roll over.  We love having this pup in our home.  He loves reading books with my son in the evening before bed.  He gets everyone going in the morning with "turbo dog" moments.  He's very curious and that makes for a great hiking partner for us."

Our adoption with SHLR was the first ever rescue we had worked with.  Sherri is very responsive and shows true empathy for these dogs.  We will be fans for life!

Many thanks to Kathy and Doug for fostering young CB/Jackson!
Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Olson
As you can see from the picture, Safe Harbor Molly thinks that her foster mom, Linda Olson, is a pretty cool Safe Harbor volunteer. In fact, Linda knew that she wanted to spend her retirement giving back, and Safe Harbor was one of the lucky recipients of Linda's volunteer efforts. Linda found Safe Harbor after fostering for three other dog rescues, and she has been a Safe Harbor foster mom for the past year and a half.

Besides sharing her home with Molly, Linda also has a German Shepherd named Lexi and a lab mix named Bella.  When asked about her favorite part of volunteering for Safe Harbor, Linda writes that, "I love providing lots of TLC for these sweet rescues, and I love seeing them go to wonderful, loving forever families!"

Thank you Linda!
