Press Release on the Morgan Grand National
|
|
The best of the best in the Morgan breed was celebrated at the 2017 edition of the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show®, held October 7-14. Since 1973, this show has represented the pinnacle of achievement in the Morgan horse world
.
More than 1,000 of the world's finest Morgan horses from across the United States and Canada met in Oklahoma City, Okla., to compete in over 300 classes for $400,000-plus in prize money.

|
|
Matt Kwapich of Bernalillo, N.M., was the show's manager for the fourth year in a row, and, this year, Sally Plumley of Monmouth, Ore., served in the capacity of show chairman.
"We were so happy to have more entries than in recent years participating in a record number of classes," Plumley said. "From thrilling park saddle classes, to carriage, including a spectacular four-in-hand presentation, and 38 entries in the newly added ranch horse pleasure class, and everything in between, there was something for everyone as the versatility of our Morgan horses was demonstrated magnificently.
“All in all, the show ran smoothly, and plans are already being put in place for 2018!" Plumley concluded.
Kwapich, along with a dedicated and hard-working show committee and staff, joined an impressive list of sponsors, officials, and volunteers to make this year's show the best ever.
The Youth of the Year Contest had 16 competitors this year and Kate Ramsower of Alamo, Calif., was crowned the winner of this prestigious contest. Ramsower, 17, will receive a unique custom-designed prize package valued at $3,500. This award is generously sponsored by the Cynthia Elaine Epperson Trust. Earning reserve honors in the contest was Emily Mulligan, 21, of Georgetown, Mass., who also earned a custom-designed prize.

Saralin In Touch, owned by Lora Lyons and shown by Tim Roesink, earned top honors as World Champion Gelding at this year's show. Roesink began his winning week by taking two-year-old Saralin In Touch to the World Champion Junior Gelding title for Little Rock Morgans. For the mares, the yearling filly Merriehill Maleficent was the World Champion Junior Mare with Whitney Bodnar showing for his family's Merriehill Farm. Ledyard Octavia was shown to the World Champion Senior Mare and World Champion Mare titles by Dwayne Knowles for William Haynes. For the stallions, the two-year-old colt, EKL Shake It Off, led by John Hufferd for Fire Run Farm, left the ring as the World Champion Junior Stallion.

Following in the footsteps of his sire, Mizrahi, Merriehill After Hours took top honors and earned World Champion Senior Stallion and World Champion Stallion titles for Theodore and Elaine Olsen for the second year in a row. The seven-year-old stallion was led to victory by trainer Eric Antman.
In the performance divisions, Antman returned to the ring again for the second year in a row to be rewarded with top honors in the World English Pleasure Championship with Merriehill After Hours. Kristen Cater rode Epona's Mo'o Lio GCH to top honors as the World Hunter Pleasure Champion for Lila Tatar. Cimi's Voodoo Daddy, with Phil Fountain in the buggy for Lynn Begalla, won the World Pleasure Driving Championship. Rick Gervasio rode SpiceOLife Rightful Heir to the World Western Pleasure Championship for Donald and Mary Lynn Geisler. Nikki Rae Woodworth took LC Amazing Spiderman to top honors as the World Park Harness Champion for George Fayad.
Katie Mair rode As Predicted GCH to win the very competitive World Park Saddle Championship for Mary Golata. This is the third year in a row this competitive gelding has earned this title. Jennifer Hazen drove her mother Sammi's Dragonsmeade Maxmara to the World Roadster to Bike Championship, a title he previously won in 2008!
The Grand National joined forces with Richfield Video and several sponsors to bring the show to online viewers for free. The video feed had an incredible viewership response.
Plans already are underway for next year's show, and Sherry Cole of Sheridan, Ind., will be the show chairman. The dates are October 6-13 in Oklahoma City.

Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show 2017 came to a close last week, and I'm so thankful for a great show! We experienced victories on many levels. Some were small while others were larger. When riding at nationals I think any kind of victory should be celebrated. Just being there with the best of the best is a victory in of itself. Ethan handled the challenges of competing in various divisions well. I feel fortunate to have a partner with as willing and cheerful of a personality as his. A big congratulations to Mom (
Kathy Kettelkamp Carlson) on your successful first ride at nationals. You and Ethan floated effortlessly around the coliseum, and it was a joy to watch your lifelong dream come true. Thank you to
Erin,
Mike and
David Silver as well as everyone else who supported us and wished us well on our Morgan Grand Nationals 2017 experience!
David Silver
Thank you to everyone who has supported and helped Kash, Chinook and me this show season and especially at MGN! I am very thankful for this opportunity and the awesome rides my horses gave me.
Erin Silver
On the long road home today after a pretty great GNWCMHS 2017! Silver Mesa had a great show overall with just 3 horses! Every ride was a success, and then some, can't really ask for more than that! Huge congratulations to David and Emily on a great week, and last but certainly not least, even a bigger CONGRATULATIONS to Kathy on her lovely ride in Amateur Masters Western Pleasure. You ran with the 'big dogs' for the very first time and did us proud!!Ready to get home for some R & R and start towards 2018!

"Another Grand National is a wrap for us! Finished up with 2 👍 and 2 👎 today. Kamima got her act together and won the Reserve World Champion Snafflebit title. Shadow lost her focus and her stop. Moira had a fun run in the Non Pro Freestyle for 3rd in a full class. Pepper was a patient soul for our Freestyle in the Open. We got disqualified x2 for the right lead and the left lead. Megan had a nice quiet ride on Kamima in the Green Rider for 4th."

Can't believe the 2017 Morgan World Championship Horse Show is over! It was a fabulous event--ten days of viewing beautiful athletic Morgan horses, catching up with old friends, making new friends!! Eating good Oklahoma food -- enjoyed several wonderful new restaurants. Leslie Hurst, Jane Bowers & I have the distinction of taking Cassie Stevenson's 7am yoga class EVERY DAY in the sales arena. It was a free drop in class requiring only a yoga mat -- others attended sporadically but we were there every day! It was not easy to do an early hour of yoga before moving on to horse show schedule and other duties. Some days I still had my yoga outfit on when it was time to get ready for dinner! But it was worth it!
The exhibitors in our barn had a great show. The Stevenson clan had our best day on Saturday with Cassie’s World Champion Classic Saddle win, Forest had Reserve WC Four Year Old Pleasure Driving with RDF Nobody’s Fool & Cass had a third out of 19 on RDF Bell Ringer in WC Ladies Park Saddle. So fun to show the horses we bred. Many thanks to Forest Nealon, Peg Alderman & Tom Tornatore for training, guidance and advice.

From Brenda Coats
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I bought Premier in 1992 from Gradell Farm in Ocala, Florida. He was to be my western show horse. We tried for a couple years and won some classes, including the one in the Far West win picture. That was probably the best win I ever had on him. It was only a Novice class, but it was the Regionals and there were 17 horses in the class. He was perfect. But the icing was that my father and stepmother just happened to come that day, along with my sister and grandmother. The ONLY class anyone in my family has ever seen in my 30+ years of showing! I couldn't have picked a better class to win.
Premier then went on to Classic and won many championships, and Doug also drove him. He was the epitome of what Morgan versatility really is, the same horse doing many things well. I gelded him
8 years ago and he got to be a horse, to have companions and to graze on grass.
So, on this, The DAY OF THE MORGAN, I laid my beautiful boy to rest.
Owned and loved by Doug & Brenda Coats
So hard to say good-bye.

We just visited the Montana State Prison Store. The Hobby program is a for the inmates in the Montana State Prison system, and the motto is to Teach, Train, and Transform. They craft hitched horse hair bridles, reins, hat bands, key fabs and they do leather and bead work and other crafts. The arts are passed on and taught from one inmate to another.
We spent some time talking to an inmate who runs the store. He was very interesting and open and admits that his time is well deserved and looks forward to next spring with the possibility of parole. He was comfortable with my questions as I have never really talked with an inmate before. What I will share is that I believe everyone makes mistakes in life and everyone has a story. With change comes forgiveness.
This man shared a lot with us about his own thoughts and he regrets what he has done and truly appreciates what the correctional institution has done for him. He said that this program has helped him incredibly to stay focused and has developed the skill of hitching horse hair and he is working on a hitched horsehair headstall that will be amazing.
Some of you may have different opinions on this, however, I will say until you've walked in those shoes or love someone who's walked in those shoes, it is not to be judged. Some made bad choices that cost them their whole life, while others can transform and make their way back into society. I wasn't sure how I would feel but I found it very interesting.

The Olson's Visiting Bill Jackson
|
|
October 28th, we visited a living legend, Bill Jackson, and the Mortana Morgan breeding program that is approaching 100 years from when they purchased their first Morgan. Bill was so proud to show us his Morgans and he shared many stories with us. At 93 years old he still rides his trusty Morgan mare Mitsy. He said he runs about 400 head of cattle and has 58 Morgans currently. He was born on his 7,000 acre ranch, as was his father and his Morgans have been real working ranch horses for nearly a century.
It was an honor to meet Bill Jackson, shake his hand that revealed a hard working ranch life, and listen to stories of yesteryear. He's a genuine cattle rancher, a great Horseman, a great smile and a giggle I will never forget.
Bill does have some mares for sale as he said it's time to start cutting back and he does have 2 foals coming next year. McKayla and I are thinking about 2 mares... I would sure love to bring some blood of the Jackson ranch to rafter Bar D. We shall see! It was like going to a museum in real living time we sure had a great day. We even got to see some of the original Homestead. for nearly a century. TYPE I DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH
I never thought I would be here. Natalie was diagnosed in May this year with type 1 Diabetes. As a Mom I support my daughter and all those warriors out there with this autoimmune disease. The disease attacks their pancreas and kills it. At this time each of them have to take insulin to keep themselves alive. Most of the time you never know who has it. As Natalie told a friend "I feel " normal."
Thanks to all of those that support her. Friends assist her with her shots or just give her a hug. One day I hope there is a cure for all those that have it and for those that will be diagnosed.
