Luther College will celebrate Homecoming 2017 Thursday through Sunday,  
October 5-8, bringing more than 5,000 friends and alumni back to campus to partake in class reunions, sporting events, musical concerts and more. For the full Homecoming schedule, go to https://www.luther.edu/homecoming/schedule/.  
 
In 1967, Weston Noble took Nordic Choir on their first international tour of Europe; Norway, West Germany and East Germany. Fifty years later, as part of a three-year student/faculty collaborative project, Aidan Spencer, Luther senior, and Jacqueline Wilkie, professor of history, created a documentary of that historic first tour. An official viewing of To This Day: Remembering Nordic Choir's First International Tour will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 7, in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, Noble Recital Hall.
 
Navigating Relationships in College will be the monthly topic for the Real Talk Discussion Series, held Wednesday, October 11, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Larsen 120. This d iscussion series is a place to engage in open, respectful dialogue about important topics that relate to our well-being. Everyone has different goals regarding romantic relationships in college. What are the challenges students face around this? Sponsored by Counseling Service, Wellness and the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.
 
Please join College Ministries, HOLA-Enlaces, Diversity Center and the Spanish 
Department in a screening of Luis Argueta's documentary "The U Turn" on  Wednesday, October 11th at 7 p.m. in Valders 206. The film tells the story of a group of Guatemalan immigrant women and children in Postville, who lost their fear of speaking out about the abuses of which they were victims to. Following the screening will be a discussion with the producer.

CEPE Pop-Up Programming--Gun Violence and Gun Law. In the wake of this week's massacre in Las Vegas, join the CEPE for a discussion on gun law and gun violence in the U.S. We'll stream two short interviews, one in favor of increasing restrictions on gun ownership, and one in favor of limiting restrictions. Then we'll have a conversation about this complex issue. Thursday, 10/12, 9:40-10:50 a.m. in Valders Hall of Science, Room 262.
 
Democratic Congressional candidates Thomas Heckroth and George Ramsey will be visiting Luther next week. Heckroth is a former staffer for Tom Harkin, and Ramsey is a 30-year military veteran. Heckroth will be here on Tuesday, October 10 at 5:45 p.m. in Olin 101. Ramsey will be here on Wednesday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dahl Centennial Union, Nansen Room. Farwell Distinguished Lecture

The 2017 Farwell Distinguished Lecture will be presented by
James Fallows on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. The award-winning journalist and author will give a talk titled It's Happening Here: American Renewal, Ingenuity, and Innovation , the result of a three-year, 54,000-mile journey across America and reports on how the country is putting itself back together in the wake of recession and division. Q & A and book signing will follow.
The Phi Beta Kappa event, "Slavery, Paul, and Luther's Legacy for the Bible," presented by Katherine Shaner, '98 will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, October 7, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Using slavery and its historical and theological context within Pauline communities, Shaner will explore how conversations about slavery have shaped modern theology and how Luther's legacy and slavery evolved both in the church and public in the following decades.

Featuring the college's premiere touring ensembles, the Luther College Homecoming Concert is at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 8, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall .

Following the life of the "father of modern science" Galileo Galilei, the Visual and Performing Arts department presents "The Life of Galileo" October 5-7 in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday; 8:30 p.m. on Friday; and at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $10 or free with Luther ID. Click for more information & to buy tickets

After spending a year advising at the U.S. State Department, Todd Green, professor of religion, will discuss his experience at 7 p.m. Sunday, October 8, in Valders 206. Green, a nationally recognized expert on Islamophobia, was asked to work in the Office of Policy and Global Issues in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, focusing on Islamophobia's impact on freedom of religion, human rights and countering violent extremism initiatives.

Fall Festival - Monday, October 9, 3:45-5:30 p.m., front lawn of Koren. All students welcome regardless of major. Enjoy music, selfie booth, games, prizes and more. Snacks will be provided, courtesy of the Education Department. Rain or Shine!
 
A student-curated exhibit, "From Parlor to Countryside: Recent Fine Arts Collection Print Acquisitions," will open Thursday, October 5, in the Luther College Union Gallery. Hannah Bergstedt, Luther junior, curated the exhibit as part of her work study opportunity. The exhibit, featuring select prints donated to the Luther Fine Arts Collection during 2017 by John and Leone Suttie, and Emeriti Professor Wilfred Bunge and Ruth Bunge, will be on display through December 4.
