New technologies and a growing interest in green infrastructure are changing the way cities solve urban environmental challenges. This
article from SmartCitiesWorld highlights
cities that are using green infrastructure in innovative ways to address
issues like stormwater, pollution, and climate change.
Architect Stefano Boeri is famed for his vertical forest skyscrapers that grace the skylines in Milan, Brazil, France, and soon China where they are visioning plans for a 'forest city'. Meanwhile, Chicago is investing in green infrastructure for its sewer system, including permeable pavers and infiltration planters.
The article also highlights Palo Alto, which recently partnered with Canopy to purchase a tree inventory mapping tool.
The map has a street tree inventory and will soon expand to include trees at parks and homes. The tool also provides data and modelling to calculate the economic and environmental benefits of trees.
For more information on Palo Alto's new mapping tool, email elise@canopy.org. |

Last month, very exciting news broke about urban forestry at the state level.
We learned that California's Assembly and Senate passed measures AB 1530, AB 109, and SB 5 in support of funding for urban trees and community forestry statewide.
A big thank you to Assemblymember Marc Berman, California ReLeaf, and members of the urban forestry coalition for working hard to make this happen.
About the measures:
Assembly Bill 1530 augments the Urban Forestry Act to connect urban forestry to job creation, stormwater management, social equity, climate adaptation and more.
Assembly Bill 109 is part I of the 2017-18 Cap-and-Trade Expenditure Plan that includes funding for CalFIRE's Urban and Community Forestry Program and new Urban Greening Program.
Senate Bill 5 is a resources bond, which would appear on the June 2018 ballot, to provide funding for urban forestry, river parkways, urban streams, and other conservation programs.

This year, we're going for Top-Rated status again!
If you've enjoyed volunteering, donating, or partnering with Canopy, please take a minute to share your story. We
only need 4 new reviews by October 31st to hit the target.
Thanks to all of you who make our work possible!

Can you guess which oak tree this acorn is from?
The picture was taken near the end of summer while the acorns were still green. Hint, this is from a California native oak.
