Program Highlight - Chinese Major

Mandarin (Standard) Chinese is the official language for over 1.3 billion people in China, with many speakers around the globe. China is the world's most populous country and second largest economy. The Chinese major is offered by the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures ( DEALL).  Through innovative teaching approaches, Chinese majors acquire a strong and well-rounded foundation in Chinese language, culture, literature and linguistics. Students become conversant in many facets of Chinese humanities both past and present. Though Mandarin is the primary focus, there are also courses in Cantonese and Classical Chinese. Besides language, strengths include early, pre-modern, and modern Chinese literature and culture, Chinese linguistics, and folk and popular culture.  There are opportunities for summer or extended study and practice in the People's Republic of China. Faculty Profile - Dr. Frederick Luis Aldama

Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor

Dr. Aldama was recently awarded the university's highest recognition for teaching excellence, the Ohio State Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Dr. Aldama teaches Film and Comics, Introduction to Film Studies and Introduction to Latina/o Studies.  He is a sought-after teacher among students in neuroscience, psychology and in the humanities. Dr. Aldama shares how he connects cognitive science with what we read or view, ways his courses explore Latinx identity and experience, how he engages students and even what he thought of the film Moonlight.  Read more.

Approved for First Year Student Success Series Credit

Meet with admission representatives from more than 20 Ohio State graduate and professional programs.  Learn what programs they offer, what's involved in applying and what you can do to strengthen your application. Students will also have the opportunity to talk with pre-law and pre-health advisors as well as representatives from the Arts and Sciences Career Center, Student Financial Aid and the Writing Center.  Dress is casual.  Free and no RSVP required.

Spring Registration

Registration will begin Monday, October 16.  Individual enrollment appointment dates vary. Check your Student Center via BuckeyeLink. Your enrollment appointment will be posted to your Student Center in the box titled, "Enrollment Information." In this box, click on the "details" link. If you have not already done so, contact your advisor to set a time to review your planned course of study before your enrollment appointment opens.

Between France and Morocco:

Diversity and Inclusion in the Francophone World

Intensive faculty-led three-week course offered in May that traces the evolution of cultural, religious, racial, and national identities in France and Morocco, focusing on shared histories between these two countries. Explore the ways in which the legacies of colonialism and immigration continue to shape both nations. Each country today has a significant number of minorities and thus faces the challenge of practicing inclusivity and respecting diversity. The first week will introduce the history and culture of Paris. The second week will make the small Southern city of Aix-en-Provence the base and explore France's gateway to the Mediterranean. Gilman Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is accepting applications for U.S. students studying abroad in 2018. The Gilman scholarship is a U.S. Department of State grant program that enables students with limited finances to study or intern abroad. The scholarship is open to U.S. students who receive the Federal Pell Grant at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in education or intern abroad programs across the globe.  Read more .

Data Analytics Month at Ohio State

A month-long series of workshops, lectures, student challenges and events focused on data analytics and decision science.  A partnership among many units across campus, the event now hosts 35+ events throughout October.  Event info.

CLLC Radio Takes to the Air

CLLC Radio is offered by the Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures.  Students of French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian train to be radio DJs for three live broadcasts in the target language.  See who is broadcasting this semester here.

A Practical Guide to Becoming a Priest of Scientific Methodism

Jonathan Yewdell, MD, PhD, chief, Laboratory of Viral Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Yewdell, who studies influenza viruses to see how viral proteins are made to better understand immune-system responses to viral infection, describes the nuts and bolts of becoming a biomedical PhD researcher.  He shares what is required to make and interpret discoveries, the sheer joy of scientific exploration and life in the worldwide research community.  More info.

Start at Home Exhibition

View a celebration of Black art including works by Ralph Bell, Queen Brooks, Smoky Brown and many more through an unprecedented collaboration between the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center, King Arts Complex, The Ohio State University Libraries, The Ohio State University's Arts Initiative, and Ohio State's Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Selections of the private collection are on display at the Urban Arts Space, King Arts Complex, Hopkins Hall Gallery, Thompson Library, Hagerty Hall and the Hale Black Cultural Center until November 4. Operatic Hors D'Oeuvres

A satisfying sampling of Continental European scenes culled from the world's most well-loved operas, from Baroque to Contemporary, with all tastes in between. Performed in French, German and Italian with projected English titles. Admission is free.  More info.

Late-Night Study Space

Do you need a quiet place for late-night study?  The 18th Avenue Library is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  Overnight access between 11:30 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. for current students, faculty and staff with your BuckID card.  The Terra Byte Cafe located in the library offers evening hours throughout the week as well as weekend hours.  Concerned about walking home at night?  Call the University's Department of Public Safety and request a safe ride.  Info on how to request a ride and service boundaries here.

Ohio State Emergency Grants

The Student Life Student Advocacy Center is now offering Ohio State Emergency Grants of up to $1,000 to help eligible student pay for unforeseen emergency expenses such as car repairs or medical bills that might force you to choose whether to pay or stay on track for graduation.
