Patricia Mew:
original ensemble member -  Anything Helps God Bless

Patricia Mew is an actress and playwright from South Portland. When asked if she'd like to participate as a researcher/actor in Anything Helps God Bless, she jumped at the chance.  Having run a social action theater in Western Massachusetts for 10 years before coming to Maine, she feels this sort of project is right up her alley. One of her first paid gigs in Maine was with Add Verb Productions co-developing/co-writing/co-directing a theater piece about homelessness called Cast Off.  That is where she first met Laurel, one of the signers who appears in the current show.  She has trained in community-based theater development with the likes of Augusto Boal (Theatre of the Oppressed), Michael Rohd and The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, all of whom specialize in developing theater pieces with community members.

As a writer, her work has been produced at Maine Play Festival, PortFringe and elsewhere.  She has worked as an actress with many Portland area theater groups, most notably Snowlion Rep, Acorn, Deertrees, Pie Man, AIRE, Maine Play Festival, Storm Warnings, Lorem Ipsum and others

The Conquest of the South Pole
Unemployed Rumford Maine mill workers imaginatively recreate Amundsen's trek to the south pole in an attic full of white sheets, in order to empower themselves amidst gut-wrenching hardships, with startling and life-affirming results. New England premiere.
Jan 26 - Feb 4, 2018

A Cherry Orchard
in Maine
This new adaptation tells of a centuries-old family of Mainers with a Midcoast farm and rare cherry orchard soon to be lost for unpaid back taxes.  Based on Chekhov's classic, this world premiere is quirky, timely and fits Maine like a moose in a meadow.

MORE EXCITING NEWS!
  • Anything Helps God Bless was featured on TWO newscasts - the Channel 6 news magazine 207 hosted by Amanda Hill, and on Channel 13 hosted by Kim Block!  Take a look at these links:

  • Reviews have come in from Portland's newspapers!  Check out these links:

  • Audiences have been moved and were eager to share their reactions to the show by writing directly to us.  Here are some quotable quotes:
"What a great performance last night!  Superb acting and great direction led to a seamless flow of passion, ideas, conflicts and compassion.  And how often do we get to watch a show that's centered in our own backyards?"  KG, Portland

"I absolutely loved the show and I am so grateful to you for creating this wonderful piece of performance art."  CS, Portland/South Carolina

"I am writing to thank you all for the heart and soul effort that went into this incredibly moving and important production."  AP, Rockport

"A really fine, haunting show!  It breaks through the margins between theater and reporting, and for a very good reason: to break through the less acknowledged, deeply marked margins we all live with between the lucky ones in our society and the unlucky ones."  RS, Portland

Anything  Helps God Bless is a dramatic, funny, touching, and ultimately life-affirming story of Portland's contentious panhandler/median strip controversy, told in the words of the players themselves:  city councilors, advocates, lawyers, mayors, police, neighborhood association heads, the press, the public, and of course, the panhandlers themselves.

Anything Helps God Bless  will have 4 more performances:

Thursday October 5 at 7:30 pm
Friday October 6 at 7:30 pm
Saturday October 7 at 7:30 pm
Sunday October 8 at 2:00 pm

Performances are at the Portland Ballet Studio Theater, 517 Forest Avenue, Portland.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.snowlionrep.org

The Best Acting Class to
Learn to Think on Your Feet!

Learn to be  SPONTANEOUS and AUTHENTIC in this fun, informative exploration of the spirit that infuses every performance...

IMAGINATION & INSTINCT:
The Spirit of Acting Technique

Teacher Al D'Andrea and his students will use a variety of games, exercises, techniques and improvisations to take an in-depth look at how to develop a strong and fluid imagination and hone the actor's instinct to bring spontaneity and authenticity to the actor's work.  Much of the teaching comes directly from Al's studies with stage legend Stella Adler.

The workshop is ideal for experienced actors who seek to master their use of this important element of stagecraft, while beginning actors receive a strong foundation in understanding the many and varied aspects of these critical tools in the actor's arsenal.  The class is open to all, ages 16 and up.
