2017 MUNICIPAL ELECTION: ISSUES THAT MATTER FOR EDMONTON SENIORS

Decisions made by the City of Edmonton about transit, affordable housing and supports for aging in place have a direct impact on the quality of life for Edmonton seniors. ESCC has developed a list of questions you can ask candidates in your ward to determine where they stand on these issues.
SENIORS' HEALTH & WELLNESS FORUM
Presented by Age Friendly Edmonton

The second annual Seniors' Health & Wellness Forum will feature presentations and panel discussions on health, wellness and social supports vital to healthy aging. Topics include: planning for a healthy future, the importance of reducing safety risks as we age, housing options, financial strategies, transportation, supports and services, and the importance of social connections to our health and wellbeing.

This free event, which is open to the public, is assembled and promoted by key community stakeholders and provides an opportunity to showcase a holistic and collaborative approach to healthy aging. Extensive information and resource materials, event admission, lunch and parking will be available free to seniors, their families and caregivers. Register by calling 780-809-8604.

Agencies interested in participating should review the Sponsor & Exhibitor Information Package. Sector staff are also asked to help spread the word about the Forum.

ADVANCE VOTING FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTION
October 4 to October 13, 1 - 7 p.m.

Wards have been grouped together for advance voting so there are six advance vote locations. Residents must vote in the designated location for their ward.

All voting stations are wheelchair accessible. At advance voting locations only, people will be able to vote using an electronic ballot marking tool that accommodates sip-and-puff, audio cues and braille.

DIGNITY DAY

Dignity Day will focus on the history and present-day realities of the dignity of persons within institutions or under state guardianship. It is a time to hear from those with experience within prisons, mental health facilities, disabilities care centres, seniors' homes and foster care. The public is invited to learn about dignity through the eyes of artists, storytellers and filmmakers with lived experience.

FEDERAL BUILDING AND ALBERTA LEGISLATURE TOUR

The bus will pick up from WSAC. The trip includes school bus transportation, a 1.5-hour walking tour of the federal building and one hour walking tour of the legislature. There will be an opportunity to purchase lunch in the cafeteria. Tickets can be purchased at the WSAC front desk. The deadline to purchase tickets is October 17. JOY OF MOVEMENT: T'AI CHI CHIH

Benefits of T'ai Chi Chih include such things as: a greater sense of overall well-being, relaxation and relief of daily stress, increased energy and stamina, improved balance and flexibility, and expanded creativity and awareness. Upon completion of this beginner's class, participants are invited to join the regular T'ai Chi Chih group that meets weekly at Bonnie Doon Community League. Volunteer/Work Opportunities for Seniors
COMFORT CART VOLUNTEER

CapitalCare Norwood Palliative Hospice is looking for a soft-spoken, good listener to bring coffee, tea, and treats around to patients who could use a little comfort. An empathetic word, smile or touch will make their day - and possibly yours too!

Your duties are simple: 
  • Set up and clean up the Comfort Cart; supplies are provided. 
  • Take Comfort Cart room to room and/or to a central area. 
  • Visit with residents and their family/visitors.
  • Ideal availability would be a weekday afternoon, two to four times a month.
Qualifications:
  • Mature volunteers are welcome, especially those who have had some unique life experiences, and who can bring a sense of calm to a sometimes stressful setting. 
  • Previous experience in a health care or customer service setting is an asset.
  • Clear Police Records Check is required, as per provincial legislation. This can be applied for during the intake process. 
The intake process involves interviews, references and orientation. Apply online or call Linda at 780-496-3252. Enhanced volunteer orientation is provided.
