I am writing to update you about the issues that resulted in closing the Middle School yesterday and again today and the steps the District is taking.   This is a top priority with my office and staff as we work to get accurate information to make safe decisions.

Yesterday,  after evaluating the entire building, completing air emission tests and other related safety inspections, the Bainbridge Fire Department gave clearance to reopen the Middle School.  We were assured it was safe to have students and staff return to Kenston Middle School.  Regretfully, this morning we faced similar issues with staff and students reporting similar symptoms.

The Bainbridge Fire Department has been actively involved with us over the last two days.  We have met with the roofing contractors to review the complete details of all work to date including all products and materials used.  This information has been given to the Chagrin/Southeast Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team.  In addition an independent engineering construction consultant specializing in roofing projects h as been on site  to review the situation and advise us.

In the meantime, the Bainbridge Fire Department has cleared the building to allow students and/or parents to come and retrieve belongings from classrooms and lockers.  The Middle School gym entrance will be open tomorrow, October 5 between the hours of 9-11am or 5-7pm.

Please know, as a parent and grandparent, I sincerely share your concern and frustration.  The safety of every student and every staff member in our District is vital. I will continue to keep you updated.

Respectfully,

Nancy R. Santilli
Superintendent
