Culver City Schools to Celebrate
International Walk to School Day on October 4
Culver City Unified School District will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 4.

Thousands of students from all Culver elementary schools and the Culver Middle and High Schools will be walking and rolling to school October 4 along with parents, teachers and community leaders.
Most events will begin at 8 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from various locations, depending on the school. City Hall will once again host Linwood Howe’s Hiking Vikings activity with a kick off event. However, all Culver schools are planning individual celebrations to kick off their year-long walk to school programs.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by Culver City Walk & Rollers as part of the city-wide Safe Routes to School Program The program, now in it’s fifth year, encourages children of all ages to walk, bike or scoot to school more often. The goal is to help students get more exercise while reducing traffic and pollution around our schools and teach children safe, responsible habits.

For additional information, please contact Jim Shanman, Culver City Safe Routes to School Coordinator at 310-204-4346 .

Thanks to Dan and Holly for all of their hard work and the time they dedicated to creating such beautiful testaments to our outstanding schools.
CCUSD Construction Update
Here are some updates on the various projects happening around the district!

The former Natatorium space is now being back-filled with dirt in preparation for blacktop surfacing and then parking space layouts. The parking area should be ready towards the end of October and will provide 80-90 more spaces than we had previously. As a reminder, this is just a temporary solution until we move ahead with some kind of (fantastic) structure in that space.

Air conditioning continues to be installed at all schools. The next steps include completing Lin Howe in the “new” building and then moving on to classrooms at Farragut, El Rincon, Middle School and High School. In order to accommodate busy summer programming, these projects will be spread out over the next two summers (2018 and 2019).

The final piece of the arch in Robert Frost was raised on September 21, allowing for the remaining work to start moving forward at a quicker pace. We are still on schedule for completion in late May 2018, with activities set to resume in summer 2018.

Plans have begun for the new science building going in the back area between the Middle School and High School, near the Lacrosse field. We look forward to providing state-of-the-art facilities for both middle and high school students sometime during the 2018-2019 school year.

The Aquatic Center/new pool (in conjunction with the City) is still on the project list. We are discussing with the City the details about maintenance, scheduling, etc. We do not have a completion date estimate on this project yet.

Support CCEF's Full STEAM Ahead Campaign
The Culver City Education Foundation (CCEF) raises funds to support enrichment programs at every Culver City Unified school. Your donation
funds district-wide STEAM programs and equipment that would not be
possible without private support. These investments in excellence make
our schools stronger and help our students on the pathway to success.

What kinds of amazing opportunities and experiences will our students have in this new school year?

Professional theatre companies will do curriculum reinforcing theatre activities with every K thru 12 student. Middle and high school students will reach greater musical heights with their new band and orchestra instruments. Students at every elementary school will plant, grow and eat vegetables in their school gardens. Members of the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra will share their passion for music with our K-3 students, teaching them about rhythm, musical notation, musical instruments and great composers. Middle and high school students will find academic support through AVID and the CCHS Athletics Academic Support Program. Children in our elementary schools will gain mathematical confidence and mastery. And our students will be working with upgraded technology.
Equipment that gives our students the ability to delve deeper and reach higher; programs that engage every part of their being— this broad range of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education is just a taste of what CCEF funding is making possible in our schools.

But to continue to offer these great opportunities, CCEF needs to raise the money to fund these programs every single year. And to add additional opportunities, programs, equipment and support for our students, we need to raise even more. That’s why we need your help. Your donations fuel everything we do.

Let our students know that they have your support as they move Full STEAM Ahead! by giving what you can. To donate online today, please click here.
Help Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research
by Eating at Chipotle on October 5
Linda Rosenberg is a five-year breast cancer survivor with students at Linwood E. Howe Elementary School and Culver City Middle School. Every year, she completes the Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer, a 39-mile walk to raise funds for vital research and care.

On Thursday, October 5 from 11am to 10pm, Chipotle in downtown Culver City (next to the Arclight theaters) will donate 50% of proceeds to Avon 39 . All you need to do is mention you’re there for the Avon fundraiser BEFORE you pay , and Chipotle will donate 50% of your purchase to Avon. You can show the flyer on your phone, printed, or just mention that you’re there to support the fundraiser (and don’t even need the flyer). For more information and to print the flyer, please click here .
