Domestic Violence Awareness Month
was a Success!

October was National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Compass Center celebrated with a host of community education, awareness, and fundraising activities meant to make this pervasive public health and societal problem a part of the public consciousness.
We were thrilled that more than 130 people attended our premiere event--a screening of the film "Five Awake" followed by a panel discussion with national and state leaders in the field of domestic violence a
dvocacy. We were grateful for all of the community support we received. Highlights of the month included:
-The mayors of both Chapel Hill and Carrboro signed Proclamations declaring October National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in their cities
-Staff and volunteers presented "Breaking the Silence" and "CUT IT OUT: Salons Against Abuse" to groups in Carrboro.
-Compass Center Executive Director Cordelia Heaney appeared on WHUP FM and the Women AdvaNCe podcast to talk about domestic violence in Orange County and across North Carolina.
- Mystery Brewing Public House in Hillsborough hosted a wi
ldly successful "Drag Queen Bingo Night" and a performance by
Tea Cup Gin.

This month, Compass Center is teaching
Making Proud Choices! to more than 400 9
th
-grade students at East Chapel Hill High School.
Making Proud Choices! is a comprehensive sexual health curriculum that covers anatomy, pregnancy prevention, condom skills practice, goal setting, and communication skills. Compass Center is proud to implement this program, which fosters safe, inclusive, and socially conscious discourse that empowers youth to advocate for their well-being.

Compass Center and the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative

Compass Center recently had the pleasure of participating in the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Professional Fellows Program. The program, funded by the US Department of State,
provides a 4-week "entrepreneur-in-residence" opportunity for young professionals. Compass Center, together with the Beacon Program at UNC Hospitals, hosted Akila S. Henry, Founder and CEO of Hope by Help, a domestic violence nonprofit she will start in St. Kitts and Nevis.
"My experience has been awesome," said Akila. "The amount of support and information has been overwhelming in a positive way. I'm so very grateful."
