#ThankaTeacherPBC: Equestrian Trails ES Student Owes His Life to Quick-Thinking Teachers

Thank a Teacher took on a whole new meaning at Equestrian Trails Elementary School last week. Third-grader Kolston Moradi owes his life to two of the schools' teachers.

As students filed into the dismissal room to wait for their parents to drive around for pick up, Kolston sat down on the carpet and waited to be called to his mom's car in the car line.

In what by all accounts can only be described as a freak accident, the simple force of his weight sitting down sent a newly-sharpened pencil that Kolston had put in the side pocket of his backpack into his arm near his armpit.

"I didn't really feel anything," Kolston explains. "But when I went to put [the pencil] in my backpack, I realized it was in me, and I pulled it out." Read more...


Veterans Day is a time for everyone to reflect on the duty and valor of our men and women in uniform who protect our freedom and lives.
For Lance Corporal Luke  Spadafora , a graduate of the Palm Beach Gardens High School Naval Junior ROTC, that duty and valor came with a added recognition by the U.S. Department of the Navy.

Spadafora  has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his decisive actions and the coordination of his crew that saved his life and the lives of his fellow crew.  Read more...


Essay Contest Winners Make Contact with Astronaut Aboard the International Space Station
In front of a packed house of proud parents, principals and other community members, a group of students lined up at a stage at the South Florida Science Center, anxiously awaiting their turn at asking an astronaut on board the International Space Station their questions.

The experience was the prize for the  2017 ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Radio) Competition at the Science Center.  The winners edged out the more than 100 applicants who vied for the once in a lifetime chance to make the connection. The winners were selected based on their questions, grammar and spelling and the enthusiasm that their essays showed for the opportunity to connect via Ham Radio with Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli, who has been on board the ISS since July. The Town Crier: Rotary To Pay Off Delinquent School Lunch Accounts

The Town Crier -  Children across Palm Beach County will benefit from the Rotary Club of Wellington's latest endeavor - paying off delinquent school lunch accounts at the Palm Beach County School District's School Food Service Department.

Wellington Rotarians will attend the Palm Beach County School Board's meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. to present a check for approximately $20,000, using money the club received through the 2017 Great Charity Challenge program.

"Every one of the school district's schools, their [school lunch] debt will be wiped out with this money," said the Rotary's Public Relations Chair, Larry Kemp.  Read more...

Galaxy E3 Students Come Together To Enjoy an Experience on the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus
 
Second graders at Galaxy E3 Elementary School had an opportunity to board a bus and learn from a legend when the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus visited the school.

The bus is a $2.5 million roving recording and video production studio that travels the country, giving students an opportunity to learn about what goes into creating the music and videos they enjoy. Some of the performers who have recorded onboard include will.i.am, Wyclef Jean, John Legend and Justin Timberlake.  Read more...

Bak Middle School of the Arts Hits High Note With Selection for International Convention

The Bak Band Department Percussionists at Bak Middle School of the Arts are used to performing in front of crowds and rehearsing for important events. This month, the band took that performance familiarity to the next level, as they embarked on an exciting journey for the first time in the school's history.

The band was recently selected to perform at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention being held this week in Indianapolis, Indiana. They are the only middle school in the world to be selected to attend the Convention. Read more...

Students #MakeItCountPBC, Read for the Gold During Summer Reading Challenge

As part of the School District of Palm Beach County's summer learning initiatives, the Division of Teaching and Learning offered all District students and teachers the opportunity to "Read for the Gold" through participation in a summer reading challenge.

Participants were asked to submit a Google form for each book they read, indicating their rating for the book as well as what they learned. Bonus points were given if the participant also created a review using technology, such as a video, slideshow or PowToons.
