Pastor's Message

  Dear Friend in Faith,

There is great satisfaction in seeing the results of your labors. Sunday will be that kind of day for us. “Change the World Day” invites us to venture out as a congregation and work in over a dozen settings around our community. We will clean, paint, garden, bake, visit and share God’s love in some very palpable ways. We’ll make care packages for the homeless, assemble Thanksgiving food boxes for the hungry and put together UMCOR (hygiene) disaster kits for places of future need. (There’s still time to give to the day; visit GIVE NOW and donate to Missions and type “Change the World Day” in the comments.)

Our vision as a church is to share a “love that crosses all barriers and embraces all people.” We’ll cross some barriers on Sunday. We’ll embrace human need in our community and know the rich blessing of giving of ourselves. For those who want to stay on campus, we’ll have many projects you can work on. Breakfast is at 8 am, and worship at 9...

Light a Candle for a Loved One; Memorial Service of Light, November 19
We invite you to join us on Sunday, November 19, 2017 for the annual Memorial Service of Light at 6 pm in the Chapel. The service will be a reflective worship experience with scripture, prayer, music and candlelight — all of which offer us a way to connect with Jesus, and feel his presence when we are grieving. The Memorial Service of Light is a time to remember our loved ones who have died (recently or not). To reserve a candle(s) in honor of a loved one, and RSVP for a reception after the service, please email Rev. Andrea Andress at andrea@pvumc.org.  your name, email, phone number and the name of the person you are remembering with the candle. Please Donate Food and Supplies for Change the World Day
For the past five years, PVUMC has packed Thanksgiving boxes for families at UMOM, and for the past four, we did this in conjunction with Change the World Day. As November 12 and our next CTWD gets closer, we ask you to be God's love in action by donating your treasure to help fund Change the World Day and your time on November 12. Check the lists of needed food and supplies for Snack and Pack and donate what you can .

Thank you for being God's love in action.
Finding Common Ground
Stephanie Varnon-Hughes from Claremont Lincoln University spoke last night during the capstone lecture of the Finding Common Ground Speaker Series. She offered strategies on how to find common ground and how we can listen to each other with the goal of better understanding one another.

Dr. Varnon-Hughes engaged the audience in a discussion about perspective, and how important it is we look at things differently to see the full picture. She also talked about “resilience” and why it’s an essential ingredient in establishing Common Ground. The examples she shared from her own life, and the discussion she led, helped the participants understand how a posture of openness deepens our engagement with others.

Next week, on Thursday, November 16, we have the final discussion - round table - based on this final lecture. Join us at 6:30 pm in the chapel.
