On September 14,
more than 50 TUPE Site Coordinators from Antioch, Brentwood, Byron, Liberty, Mt. Diablo, Pittsburg, and West Contra Costa school districts came together for our seventh annual countywide TUPE Site Coordinators training. This year's theme was "The Flavor Trap" and focused on the impact of menthol and flavored tobacco products. Check out the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

Nicotine is a highly addictive neurotoxin and exposure to nicotine, either in cigarettes, little cigars, cigarillos, smokeless/chew tobacco or e-cigarettes, can harm brain development.

Conference: Welcoming Schools & Communities Summit/Rainbow High
Saturday, October 7 | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
This annual event focuses on creating safe and affirming spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth. Open to educators, teachers, faith community members, service providers, healthcare providers, parents, guardians, and youth (ages 11-25).
Hosted by the Contra Costa Inclusive Schools Coalition, Mt. Diablo Unified School District, and the Rainbow Community
Center.

Workshop: Human Trafficking & Commerical Exploitation of Children
Wednesday, October 18 | 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and a fundamental violation of a person's human rights. Given the trafficking trends throughout the world, we know that the East Bay region, and more specifically Contra Costa County, is not immune to the plight of trafficked and exploited persons. The average age of entry into human sex trafficking is 12 -- some of our students may already be targeted by exploiters.

Film Screening: "And Then They Came For Us"
Monday, October 30 | 4:00 - 6:00 PM
Please join us for a screening of the film "And Then They Came for Us" (2017), by social justice filmmaker Abby Ginzberg, featuring actor George Takei, who was interned as a child in an American camp for Japanese American citizens. The film warns that building walls and banning Muslims echo the World War II disaster of incarcerating innocent Japanese Americans.

Training: Brief Intervention for Substance-Using Adolescents
Thursday, November 30 | 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Brief Intervention is a short-term counseling intervention that consists of two to four sessions aimed at adolescents who use alcohol, tobacco and/or other drugs. Appropriate for school counselors, administrators, TUPE Site Coordinators, afterschool program staff, and community-based organization staff. Continued Education Hours (LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs) available.

Resource: All Kids Are Our Kids
A post-election toolkit for educators
CCCOE's Communications Department coordinated the creation of a toolkit with resources to help school administrators communicate with employees, parents, and students about items of interest following the 2016 presidential election.
Among other things, the toolkit includes strategies in dealing with potential student demonstrations, tips for educators and parents to support students in stressful times, examples of communications sent by teachers and administrators in the wake of the election, and policy-focused resources that address immigrant rights.

Community Forums: Underage Drinking & Drug Use
Are you concerned about alcohol and other drug use in your community?
Residents are invited to talk about major issues surrounding underage alcohol and marijuana use, unused and expired prescriptions, and other drug use to influence future services in our communities. These meetings are free and open to all Contra Costa County residents especially young people.
