Oct. 32 and Beyond
ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton

In her September column for Living Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton shares memories of family Thanksgivings, where all would come to the table together. That is true for our church, too, as Jesus invites us all to a meal of healing, forgiveness and thanksgiving. This is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. For the past year it has been "All Reformation All the Time!" Everything Martin Luther. The really observant have branched out to Philipp Melanchthon and Johannes Bugenhagen. True believers will dress their children up as Martin and Katie for Halloween, or if they tend toward the fear factor, Johann Tetzel.

Bring in the extra brass. Fire up the choir. Sing the fight song ("A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"). Dress in red. Binge-watch every Luther film and documentary. (I particularly liked Joseph Fiennes as the young, hot Luther.) This is our year!

Oct. 32.

Now w hat?

FROM OUR CONGREGATIONS

Joy Lutheran -  Eagle River
On September 10th, the people of Joy Lutheran gathered after worship to assemble "personal care boxes" for our homeless and shelter-at-risk neighbors. Each shoe-box sized container was filled with some basic sanitary and personal care products, including: tooth brushes and tooth paste, shampoo and conditioner, skin lotion, deodorant, and shaving needs.  Boxes were also specified for women, men, and children.

Over 60 of these boxes were assembled and given to the Chugiak/Eagle River Food Pantry.  This project was envisioned, organized, and supervised by Church Council member, Ami Soellers, who is also a Junior at Eagle River High School.

St. Mark - Anchorage
Every Tuesday, at 7:00pm, we host workshop led by  Lifetree Cafe.
Upcoming topics include:
  • Toxic Faith: When Religion Hurts
  • The 60-minute Guide to Greater Confidence
  • The Black and White Truth about Racism
  • Mysteries of Mental Illness
You can find us at 3230 Lake Otis Parkway.

Anchorage Lutheran
On October 28th and 29th, we will honor the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation with "An All-Alaska Celebration".   In addition to worship, we will have games for youth, meals, a concert and hymn singing.

We look forward to seeing you here at Anchorage Lutheran for this very festive event.

NATIONWIDE AND GLOBAL

ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering
This event will take place Jan. 21-24, 2018, in Washington, D.C.! Through an invitation of two people per synod, we come together for a time of networking, idea-sharing and planning for our common work. Attendees are equipped and mobilized to bring ideas and training back to their synods and congregations to inspire others!

Join us in Washington as we learn more about ELCA World Hunger. We will explore advocacy as part of our comprehensive approach that affects public policy and works toward a just world in which all are fed.

The cost for this event is $325, which includes double-room hotel accommodation, travel, programming and most meals.  E-mail [email protected] for more information.

Disability Ministry
We have been receiving inquiries from congregations asking about ways to learn about recommended resources and best practices for those developing new ministries or expanding upon an existing ministry with and for persons with disabilities. Several congregations are beginning to include sign language interpreters; a good number of congregations are starting/expanding a recovery ministry for persons living with addiction or mental health diagnosis; some are dedicated to creating a more welcoming environment for full participation and leadership for persons living with physical disabilities (sight loss, hearing loss, or mobility challenges).

We'd like your help.

Help us identify those ministries who are doing great work by telling us... Who is doing what ministries related to disabilities in your area? How can we best connect/learn more about them and help you become involved?

Send us a name (person or ministry), where they are located (contact information), or simply a newsletter article about those doing the amazing work that God entrusts to us, by e-mail. We'll not only provide a list and opportunities for networking for those doing the work, but share available information and resources with you upon request.

RESOURCES

Responding to Violence
We are committed to reducing violence.  This work is a sign of our unity in Christ who calls us to be peacemakers.

As we reflect on how to respond, the ELCA has a range of resources available.

10W Online
We offer weekly worship services, approximately 10 minutes in length. The services are on both the Revised Common Lectionary and the Narrative Lectionary.

The Feast of St. Francis
In October, the church observes the Feast of St. Francis, who had a special love for God's creatures. Many congregations celebrate this feast day with a special blessing of pets and animals. Read about how one congregation celebrates the legacy of St. Francis in an excerpt from Gather's October issue.

Never Give Up: A Video by Youth for Youth
This gripping film features a highly diverse cast of seven adolescents and young adults who examine the shared and unique challenges faced, mistakes made, and growth attained in the struggle to transcend legacies of developmental trauma.

Unexpectedly insightful, unsentimentally poignant and always real, Never Give Up is an offering of collective wisdom, inspiration and hope for young people ensnared by adverse life experiences such as chronic neglect, violence, abuse, bullying, and exploitation from seven peers and mentors who came just before them and found their way through.

This ground-breaking product developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) was made specifically for youth.

Beer & Hymns - Anchorage
The next fundraiser to benefit Lutheran Social Services is Sunday, October 8, from 6:00-9:00PM at O'Brady's on Huffman in the Huffman Carr's mall.  Come & enjoy fellowship and song while supporting LSSA.

Adult Education
Learning more about scripture, church history, and theology are part of maturing as Christians. These are resources that help us shape our daily lives of faith and how we perceive what God is up to in the world. Sometimes this happens individually, sometimes in group studies and classes. Some adults are asked by their congregations to pursue training to serve as Synodically Authorized Ministers. Some serve as lay preachers. Some engage in education for the simple joy of learning.

SELECT offers courses that congregations and individuals can purchase. SELECT courses cover the full spectrum of preparation for service as a Synodically Authorized Minister.

Two courses being developed are "The Gospels" with Pastor Jeff Hackler and "Preaching" with Pastor Martin Eldred. The course will be offered in the Anchorage and then off-the road. These will be especially helpful to those serving as lay preachers in their congregation.

Details are being firmed up now. If you are interested in serving as a Synodically Authorized Minister, learn more on our website.
