It's Time to Talk Turkey
November is turkey time, and the Park Authority is offering a variety of programs to help you learn all about this native bird. Youngsters will discover the difference between a jake and jenny in the Tricky Turkeys program at Hidden Oaks Nature Center on Sunday, November 5, 2017. Through a story, song and craft, children age three to five will learn about surprisingly curious baby turkeys and their grown-ups. The program runs from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., and the cost is $6 per child. Hidden Oaks Nature Center is located at 7701 Royce Street, Annandale, VA. For more information, call 703-941-1065 or visit Hidden Oaks Nature Center.

Wild turkeys still roam the meadows and riverbanks at Riverbend Park. On Saturday, November 18, learn about these elusive and seasonal birds through games and activities at the Terrific Turkeys campfire. Bring a toasting stick. S'mores will be provided. The program from 6 to 7 p.m. costs $8 per person and is designed for participants age two to adult. Come early if you want to bring a picnic meal or hot dogs to toast. This event will be canceled if it rains. Riverbend Park is located at 8700 Potomac Hills Street, Great Falls, VA. For more information, call 703-759-9018 or visit Riverbend Park.

Take a Turkey Walk on Saturday, November 25 at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park. Discover the wild turkey's habits and secret ways during a walk through the cedar forest. Look for turkeys and their signs. Park Foundation volunteers will be providing giveaways and accepting voluntary donations near Santa and his Helpers to build a new Birthday Party Picnic Shelter in this much-loved park.

It's United Way and CFC Campaign time!

Once again the Park Foundation is a participating organization with the United Way (UW Code #9400) and the Combined Federal Campaign(CFC Code #38066) of the National Capital Area. When you make your fall campaign contributions consider designating the Fairfax County Park Foundation as your recipient.

As in 2016, your generous CFC and United Way campaign donations were used by the park foundation to fund open space land preservation, environmental education, adapted recreation, community outreach, cultural, historical, and many other park programs.

Employers Matching Volunteer Activities

Last month many readers explored their employer's matching donation and volunteer activities.

Since some matching programs expire at the end of each calendar year, you are encouraged to check with your employer to see if the Fairfax County Park Foundation can benefit from their matching programs:

Please submit the necessary documentation to your employer so they can match your gift and volunteer hour contributions.  The Park Foundation especially appreciates the generosity of donations that include matching funds.

If you have questions, please call the Park Foundation at 703-324-8581 for more information.
