Over the last few weeks we have seen repeated images of the destruction that has been wrought from successive hurricanes impacting the United States and the Caribbean. First Harvey, then Irma, and finally Maria left a trail of devastation. In the midst of these tragedies there were others - an earthquake in Mexico, flooding in India, and the continued plight of refugees - it can feel overwhelming. What is our proper response to these tragedies as people of faith?
Christ calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves and many private citizens, non-profit organizations, and agencies of our government are reaching out to those who are suffering from these disasters. The needs far outweigh the available resources and the logistical support needed to get help to those that need it most are strained to capacity. As Episcopalians, we can continue to help by donating to the Episcopal Relief and Development's Hurricane Relief Fund.
After Hurricane Harvey, I asked our staff to look into how the Diocese could better serve when these tragedies occur. Over the next few weeks I will be appointing a Diocesan Disaster Coordinator and a Diocesan Disaster Committee to help educate and lead our diocesan response to future disasters.
I want to thank you for all of the ways that you have reached out and shared the love of Jesus during these crises, and encourage your continued support of the humanitarian efforts.

En las últimas semanas hemos visto imágenes repetidas de la destrucción que
tiene sido causados por sucesivos huracanes que impactaron a los Estados Unidos y el Caribe. Primero Harvey, luego Irma, y finalmente María dejaron un rastro de devastación. En medio de estas tragedias hubo otros - un terremoto en México, inundaciones en la India, y la continua situación de los refugiados - puede sentirse abrumador. ¿Cuál es nuestra respuesta adecuada a estas tragedias como personas de fe?
Cristo nos llama a amar a nuestros vecinos como a nosotros mismos y a muchos otros, ciudadanos privados, organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro y agencias de nuestro gobierno, están llegando a quienes sufren estos desastres. Las necesidades superan con creces los recursos disponibles y el apoyo logístico necesario para obtener ayuda a aquellos que más lo necesitan, están llegando al límite. Como Episcopales podemos continuar ayudando donando al Fondo Episcopal de Socorro y Desarrollo para el
Socorro de Huracanes.
Después del huracán Harvey, pedí a nuestro personal que estudiara cómo la Diócesis podría servir mejor cuando ocurran estas tragedias. En las próximas semanas estaré nombrando un Coordinador Diocesano de Desastres y un Comité Diocesano de Desastres para ayudar a educar y dirigir nuestra respuesta diocesana a futuros desastres.
Quiero darles las gracias por todas las formas en que han alcanzado y compartido el amor de Jesús durante estas crisis y alentar su apoyo continuo a los esfuerzos humanitarios.
