Shabbat morning sermon: Las Vegas, Sukkot and Ecclesiastes
S'uda Shlishit-- Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
We will postpone the conclusion of the thought-provoking piece by JJ Goldberg until next week, and instead roll our weekday Torah from the end all the way back to the beginning. Along the way, we will take a tour of the Torah's scribal oddities (like the 6th Book of the Torah embedded in the Book of Numbers) and highlights such as the 10 Commandments, and the Sh'ma. For those of you have never seen the end of the Torah or its beginning, and if are curious about what's in the middle, this is the perfect opportunity.
We will read excerpts from Ecclesiastes on Shabbat morning:
Finding Faith in Sukkot

Tony Blair Blasts Roger Waters for Spewing "Ideological Poison" about Israel
Tony Blair has been drawn into Labour's bitter anti-Semitism row after condemning rock star Roger Waters for spewing 'ideological poison' about Israel.
The former Prime Minister spoke out after the Pink Floyd singer and guitarist compared the Israeli government to Nazi Germany and called for a boycott by artists over its record on rights for Palestinians.
Waters, a Labour activist and supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, said the 'parallels [between Israel's actions] and what went on in the 1930s in Germany are so crushingly obvious' and criticised the 'extraordinarily powerful' Jewish lobby.
Mr Blair, who frequently defended Israel's record during his time as a Middle East peace envoy, was asked in an interview if Waters's remarks were anti-Semitic.
'I think the criticism [of Israel by Waters] is so ludicrous that it indicates a basic hostility to the notion of a homeland for the Jewish people... you've got to overcome the legacy of that ideological poison which has dripped into the system over many decades,' he said.
The intervention by Mr Blair - whose own pop career peaked with the group Ugly Rumours as a student - came after a week in which Labour's annual party conference in Brighton was dominated by arguments about the alleged anti-Semitic beliefs of Mr Corbyn's followers.
The leader fueled the allegations by failing to turn up at a reception for Labour Friends of Israel, while his deputy Tom Watson pledged an investigation into how campaigners were allowed to use the conference fringe to question the Holocaust.
The Jewish Labour Movement demanded action over what it says was the use of an 'anti-Semitic trope' in the conference hall at Brighton, and called for 'zero tolerance' of such comments.
But Unite union leader Len McCluskey said claims that the leadership was condoning anti-Semitism, racism and misogyny were designed to 'bring Jeremy Corbyn down'.
Mr Blair was also asked during the interview by campaigning filmmaker Ian Halperin, as part of a documentary about Waters's political beliefs, whether it was a 'big insult to six million innocent Jews who perished' to make the comparison with Hitler's Germany.
Mr Blair said: 'Yes. I'm a great fan of the music of Pink Floyd, but I don't agree with Roger Waters and his campaign. I think it is part of a wider alliance which is dangerous and worries me... which is the leftist-Islamist alliance. It's a growing problem... there is nothing progressive about a totalitarian ideology.'
A spokeswoman for Waters declined to comment.

"Dear Kuwait. If you want to boycott Israel, be my guest. Refuse me service. But also give me your USB flash drives, your phones, your safe driving cars, your Viber, your Waze or your anti-virus. This is also Israel."

Archaeologists digging under the old parade grounds of a disused IDF training base near the town of Beit El in the West Bank uncovered a Jewish city dating back to the First Temple period (960-568 BCE), Yediot Ahronot reported.
"The findings are amazing," said archaeologist Yevgeny Aharonovitch. "We found keys for doors that were intended for housing units, we found tools that were used by Jews, and seal types belonging to the [Jewish] period." The city was probably destroyed in a great earthquake near the end of the 8th century CE, he said.

Torah Reading 538, 935                         Haftarah 1260
SHABBAT CHOL HAMO'ED SUKKOT

In the aftermath of the debacle of the sin of the Gold Calf, Moses expresses his frustrations in leading the Israelites. He asks God for guidance in his leadership of the people as well as a sign from God of God's continued confidence in him.

God commands Moses to hew out a second set of tablets to replace the original set which Moses has smashed in anger, and to ascend Mount Sinai. There God grants Moses' dual request. By granting Moses a personal revelation God reaffirms his trust in Moses, and in the content of this very special revelation God provides Moses with His chief attributes. These attributes are the means through which Moses will become a more effective leader - able to emulate God in his interactions, and to intercede with God on behalf of the Israelites in the event of their subsequent sinfulness.

Immediately following this revelation God promises to rid the land of its inhabitants for the sake of the Israelites so long as they foreswear idolatry and intermarriage, observe the three pilgrimage
Festivals - including Sukkot , bring the first fruits offering and observe Kashrut.
