National Adoption Competency Mental Health
Training Initiative

This research initiative started in October, 2014 and is funded through a 5-year cooperative agreement between the Children's Bureau, and the Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.), working alongside the University of Maryland School of Social Work Institute for Innovation and Implementation.

NTI will develop, pilot and evaluate  two state of the art, standardized, web-based trainings to build the capacity of child welfare professionals and mental health practitioners in all States, Tribes and Territories, to better understand and address the mental health needs of children, youth and their families moving toward or having achieved permanency through adoption and guardianship.

California is one of eight states selected to pilot a web-based training that focuses on permanency options for foster children. The Child Welfare Phase I has been launched, which includes child welfare and probation staff, providers and adoption agencies (over 2,000 have volunteered).  Phase II will consist of mental health practitioners and will launch in January 2018.  Our next steps are working on engagement of mental health practitioners. The training is free and provides CEUs to those with a license.

By the end of the 5-year initiative (October 2018), the web-based training will be available for use by all child welfare and mental health professionals in all states, tribes and territories.
