Can you die of a broken heart?
Broken heart syndrome often mimics symptoms of heart attack

Broken heart syndrome is a temporary heart condition brought on by stressful situations or by a serious physical illness or surgery.
When your heart is broken, it can feel like the end of the world.

Broken heart syndrome is a temporary heart condition brought on by stressful situations or by a serious physical illness or surgery. Symptoms of broken heart syndrome often mimic those of a heart attack.

"In broken heart syndrome there is a temporary disruption of your heart's normal pumping function in one area of the heart," says  Dr. Randi Rose, a Cardiologist at North York General Hospital.

Transforming our care environments

At North York General Hospital, ensuring our hospital's physical spaces meet the needs of our current patient population as well as the future needs of a growing, diverse community is a top priority. The hospital has been diligently crafting a Master Plan for the hospital, a road map for the development of our future physical spaces in 5, 10 or even 40 years' time.

"We view our physical spaces as a key element in the health care journey; they must be designed to provide the best experience for patients and families," says Paul Clarry, Interim Vice President, Planning, Facilities and Support Services. "It's not just about the space inside the hospital, it's also about exploring how our facility fits into the health care landscape."

During summer 2017, NYGH began the necessary construction work to preserve the heritage building in the Phillips House redevelopment.
Specialized care for colorectal cancer survivors

Vivian Hall is receiving care in the Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Program.
For  Vivian Hall "survivorship" means staying as positive as you can, even when dealing with very difficult circumstances. At 75 she was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of both male and female cancer-related deaths in Canada.

Fortunately, Vivian's cancer was diagnosed and treated quickly at North York General Hospital, which has the best cancer surgery wait times in Ontario and the most surgical oncologists in the region.

Today, Vivian is part of the North York Family Health Team Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Program.

What goes around comes around, including the flu

The best course of action to prevent the flu is to get your annual flu vaccine.
Every winter in Canada, along with snow and cold weather, comes the dreaded influenza virus, also known as the flu. "In Canada flu activity can be seen as early as October and may extend into early spring," says Maja McGuire, Director of Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness.

Find out more about this virus and get Maja's tips to help you fight the flu.

Standing on your own two feet

Studies have shown that shoes can cause strains and stresses on the foot, preventing a natural ease of function and movement.
While high heels may be fashionable, they place the foot in an unnatural position and put excessive stress on the ball of the foot, causing inflammation, pain and possibly even hairline fractures.

"Ideal footwear should be both functional and comfortable," says Dr. Herman Dhotar, Orthopaedic Surgeon in our Gulshan & Pyarali G. Nanji Orthopaedic and Plastics Centre.
