The 3rd IEEE EMBS international Student Conference in Egypt (ISC-Egypt'17) is going to take place on 12-13 October 2017, at Nile University, Cairo, Egypt. The conference is intended to be a scientific gathering of Biomedical Engineering students from around the world. Aiming to create an inspiring environment for students by giving them the opportunity to share their scientific project and ideas in a professional environment. The conference is organized and planned by students.

The first IEEE Life Sciences Conference (LSC) will be held in Sydney, Australia, 13-15 December 2017. The overall theme of the conference is "Personalized Healthcare & Wearables". The IEEE Life Sciences Technical Community (LSTC), which is supported by multiple IEEE member societies, is the sponsor of the conference. As such, the conference will cover diverse topics within the theme.
LSC 2017 will include tutorials and a scientific program composed of plenary talks, invited sessions, and poster presentations of peer-reviewed papers. In addition, there will be a host of special events, including a Standards Track, an IEEE Women in Engineering event, a High School Competition, an e-textile style fashion show, and an IBM Big Data/Watson event in partnership with the IEEE Big Data Initiative

Full-Paper Instructions
Papers are limited to 4 pages, with an additional $200 fee for up to 1 extra page. Four pages must contain technical content, figures, and references, while the 5th page may contain only references. This is the maximum number of pages that will be accepted, including all figures, tables, and references. Any documents that exceed the 5-page limit, or that have a 5th page containing anything other than references, will be rejected.

ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.
At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

MICCAI 2017 Workshop on Statistical Atlases and Computational Models of the Heart (STACOM)
The Statistical Atlases and Computational Modeling of the Heart (STACOM) workshop is a major annual
satellite event of the international MICCAI conference (http://stacom2017.cardiacatlas.org).
STACOM has created an excellent collaborative forum for researchers actively involved in biomedical
engineering, computer science, physics, and mathematics.
The overarching focus is to advance quantitative cardiac imaging and image analysis methods, statistical
analysis of cardiac morphology and dynamics techniques, novel computational electro-mechanical modelling
of the heart and fluid dynamics, data/models sharing and translational methods into the clinical practice for
better diagnosis and therapy guidance of various cardiac diseases.
The 8th edition (STACOM 2017) was successfully held in Quebec City (CA) along with the Multi-Modality
Whole Heart Segmentation (MMWHS) and Automated Cardiac Diagnosis Challenge (ACDC) challenges,
attracting approximately 100 participants..

Cross-Disciplinary Medical Advances with Neuroengineering
|

CHALLENGES SPUR DEVELOPMENT OF UNIQUE REHABILITATIVE AND THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS
|
Neuroengineering brings tools and techniques from the engineering fields into neuroscience to create new approaches for investigating the central nervous system (CNS). This fusion of disciplines is advancing our knowledge of how the CNS works and how we can enhance our natural cognitive and emotional function and restore neurological functions that are compromised by disease or injury. In order to deal with the extremely large data sets that arise from trillions of interactions among our neurons, neuroengineering often draws on computational and statistical approaches. Techniques from electrical, chemical, and mechanical engineering, as well as from signal processing, are also frequently incorporated into experimental and clinical neuroscience. Such fusion of disciplines has greatly accelerated the development of rehabilitative and therapeutic interventions. This article highlights a few areas where neuroengineering is making unique and valuable contributions.

Managing Heart Failure at Home with Point-of-Care Diagnostics

The objective of this paper is development of an inexpensive point-of-care sensor for detecting the primary heart failure marker peptide, NT-proBNP. The device technology is based on an antibody sandwich assay, but with three innovative aspects. First, chemical amplification is carried out via oxidation of silver nanoparticles (NPs) attached to signaling antibodies rather than by enzymatic amplification. The electrochemical method is faster and eliminates the need for long-term storage of enzymes. Second, the antibody sandwich is formed on mobile magnetic beads. This enhances the rate of mass transfer of the biomarker and the signaling antibody to the primary detection antibody, which is immobilized on the magnetic beads. Third, the sensor itself is fabricated on a paper platform with screen-printed electrodes. This coupled with assembly by simple paper folding, keeps the cost of the sensor low. Here, we report on two separate assays. The first is based on a simple biotin-streptavidin conjugate, which is a preliminary model for the antibody assay.
The results indicate a detection limit of 2.1 pM of silver NPs and an assay time of 7 min. The actual NT-proBNP antibody assay takes somewhat longer, and the dynamic detection range is higher: 2.9-582 nM. On the basis of the results presented in this paper, we conclude that this inexpensive paper-based sensor represents a viable technology for point-of-care testing of NT-proBNP, but nevertheless several challenges remain prior to clinical implementation. These include attaining a lower detection limit and better reproducibility, and optimizing the device for human blood.
