Issues & Insights: Business Under Siege

In recent months, business owners have been telling me that they feel like there's a target on their backs and the Provincial and Federal Governments are taking aim. Some Government spokespeople are using inflammatory language that paints business owners as the bad guys. They point to current laws as being unfair, suggesting that those who abide by these rules are getting some sort of special treatment. In both cases, the changes proposed and timelines for implementation will make it harder for small business owners to be successful while some may be unable to continue to operate at all.

The Canadian government is proposing sweeping changes to small business taxes. Nobody supports tax evasion or loopholes. But these changes will severely hurt small businesses.

Commercial/Industrial Building Owners: The City of Thunder Bay wants to hear from you! 
Since 1998, eligible property owners with vacant commercial or industrial properties have received a property tax rebate under the Vacant Unit Rebate Program. The Province of Ontario is now allowing municipalities flexibility to tailor the program to community needs.

Make your voice heard at Queen's Park!  The Business Confidence Survey, which attracted considerable media and government attention earlier this year with the launch of our Ontario Economic Report ( OER), is in field once again. Make sure to take this short survey at  occ.ca/surveys   so that OUR region is represented. 


Canada Anti-Spam legislation: your feedback
The  Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, has directed the INDU Committee (Parliamentary Standing Committee for Industry) to conduct a statutory review of Canada's Anti-spam Legislation (CASL). The Canadian Chamber has been working with multiple partners over the past decade to voice the opinions of business about CASL. Make sure your voice is heard and take a few moments to complete the   survey.
